A new employee brought his personal Treo here that he used to sync with his e-mail at his old employer.

Can't change the user ID and from other forums I've gleaned that the way around this is to re-load Active Sync on the Treo.

We can connect to the Web and get to most web pages fine, but the Active Sync download page repeatedly only loads about 85%, just enough to get about 1/2 of the download button on the screen. So, we can't get the software from the web.

Connected the Treo to his PC both by beaming and by cable. Moved the setup.msi file from the PC to the Treo. Treo's OS doesn't recognize the setup file. Says that .msi is not a recognized file type. It's running Windows Mobile, so WTF?

Any suggestions on how to either change the userid that was previously configured (his old company says they always just re-load Active Sync) or how to get Active Sync installed on the Treo????

TIA!

Active Sync is built into the ROM of the Treo, and can't be "reinstalled" this way. What you are trying to do is install the desktop client on the handheld (which is why it won't work).

To change the Device ID name on the Treo, go to Start > Settings > System (tab on the bottom) > About > Device ID.

Edit: Not sure if this is what you wanted, or if you needed to change the User ID for setting up e-mail (whether it's retrieved from a POP3/IMAP server, or pushed from an Exchange server).

Thanks GuruX.

I need to change the UserID for setting up synchronization of his e-mail with our Exchange 2007 server.

His userid is already populated and "grayed out" when I try to change the sync settings. I can change the server and the user password, but not the userid.

Hmm, might not be able to help on this one then sadly.... I haven't gone through setting up a WM device to sync via Exchange.

....just to clarify, have you tried creating a new account to sync with an Exchange server? (under Messaging).

Which Treo is it?

It's possible that his last company pushed some windows policies onto the phone that are locking some fields. We push policies onto our users phones (require password, auto lock after x minutes, etc).

Try this - go to his activesync settings (on the phone), go to 'configure server', and remove the server name that's in there. Reboot the phone, and then go back & add your server info. That will hopefully unlock the userid field & allow you to log him in.

If THAT doesn't work, then I'd recommend that you take my approach to this situation by tossing the phone back to him & saying, "Sorry, we only support company owned equipment. If your boss approves it, I'll buy you an approved phone that we've already tested & certified on our server." For me, that works every time.
