I've been reading lately that the price of lobsters have dropped substantially. I've seen a few dollars difference when passing Chinese restaurants selling twin lobster dinners for about $23 when I remember them going for more like $28 or more.
Anyone in Maine like to confirm?

I noticed it too. Seafood place downstairs is selling them at a fairly reduced price. I just assumed it was because they're no longer in season so the catch is crap. But maybe there's more to it.

Doesn't that usually result in the opposite? An increase in price?

Only if quality is maintained. If in the offseason you can only get 1 or 1 1/4 pounders max, the price will drop because demand will drop for a less desirable product. When I said "The catch is crap," I was referring to the quality of the catch as much as the quantity.

*snip *Retailers as far south as Washington, D.C., are selling live lobster for as little as $5.99 a pound, said Neal Workman, founder and head of The Fisheries Exchange, a Boston-based company that tracks prices, catches and other market information for the lobster industry. *snip*
Now I have to go out and find out where they are selling $5.99/lb lobsters. That's just incredible.

So does this now mean that when she "goes for the lobster" on a date... you ain't gonna automatically get lucky anymore? :heh:

Hey, here's an idea. The fed gov't should buy the extra lobsters and put them back in the ocean. Keep prices and demand steady, y'know. I want a government grant to research turning lobsters into auto fuel. They could add it to the farm bill. Ten years from now maybe there'll be a little "10% lobster" sign on the gas pumps.
