They feature Core 2 Duo processor, 15.4" widescreen displays with CCFL or LED Backlight, Trackpoint AND TouchPad (aka UltraNav) and 802.11 along with a host of other details that make these premium notebooks within the ThinkPad series. The $899 configuration gives you almost the identical computer as the $1179 configuration. The difference is in the graphics which 99% of you won't be able to tell) and the processor which you're choosing between a 2.26GHz or a 2.4GHz for almost $200 more. Here's what I did:

Or start here to go directly to configuring the model I upgraded myself: LENOVO THINKPAD T500 $899 NOTEBOOK DEAL

Upgrade the display to either the 15.4" WXGA LED Backlight for $50, or my personal choice to the very nice WSXGA+ with CCFL Backlight for $75.

The UltraNav with the Fingerprint Reader - necessary if this notebook is traveling a lot or if you're a student in a dorm.

I would upgrade the hard drive to the 250GB 5400 RPM for $95. If you're doing heavy Photoshop or video editing work upgrade to the 160GB 7200RPM drive and pick up an external portable drive for archiving.

If you need to burn DVD's, pick up the dual layer DVD recordable slim drive for $70. Otherwise, if you're only going to watch movies, the CDRW/DVDROM drive is plenty. (I've personally never burned a DVD in my LIFE while traveling - everything gets backed up on just archived on my Western Digital Passport Drive until I get home)

Bluetooth for $29 is pretty nice if you need it. And I would get the 9 cell battery just for the juice.

Check out. Save 10% by using coupon code: USPT500JAN (expires 1/12/09)

Upgrade your memory at Crucial (the only place I trust- memory is cheaper elsewhere but I prefer the brand name & avoid the potential headaches). You can add 4GB of memory to each slot (as opposed to only 2GB like Dell's or HP's) at a hefty $499. However, I would just get 2 - 2GB sticks for $51 each (as opposed to Lenovo's "discounted" price of $157) and have plenty of power for your brand new ThinkPad. CRUCIAL MEMORY DEALS
