My in-laws say there computer is crashing every few days complaining about registry errors. This system is three hours away, so I can't get to it easily. I'm wondering if there is any decent (read: not malware) registry cleaners out there that they might try?

Plan B is to reformat and re-install, but I'd like to avoid that if possible because my FIL is a technophobe and will freak out at that prospect.

CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim) FTW!

:stupid: CCleaner is easy and provides a reg backup file in case you delete anything you should have kept.

and it's free.

What OS are they using? you could also do it remotely, by doing a request remote assistance via msn messenger or just rdc'ing into their machine.

Here is, bar none, the easiest remote access app I've ever used:

before I cleaned the reg, I'd try to find out what exactly the errors are. It may simply be something in the startup folder or directory that is looking for a reg setting for a program that wasn't uninstalled correctly. CCcleaner won't necessarily fix that. Or, a program needs to installed correctly. Reg errors don't always mean it's the reg file that is wrong.

I was going to suggest this as well - great remote app that's easy to install. For some reason, my father's PC wouldn't sustain a remote assistance request for very long, but Ammyy worked perfectly.
