"Damage to myself" made him decide to stop?
Just partying too much? Or maybe not enough for the rest of the band? Maybe he's coming down w/carpal tunnel? Just exhausted?
I liked the band way better with Cliff, no doubt, but I think that had more to do with where the band was at that stage in their careers (young, fast and hungry, not old, rich, and bored), and less to do with which bassist was better. Its about time someone realized it was time to pack it in. I hope the others have the sense to pursue other things.

OOF.
Just read the end of the article, where it said Metallica will hire a new bassist and try to go on. Wankers. Maybe if they hired on Les Claypool, they'd have a shot. Doubt Claypool would be interested, though.
NOOOOOOOOOOO. No jason means metallica wont be the same. It wasnt the same since Cliff died, and it wont be the same now. Jason's been a great player since flotsam and jetsam.

He was the only one that I had an ounce of respect left for in Metallica. Good for him.

Jason Newstead's loss was not major. He didn't right much anywho. Cliff's loss was tragic.
Now if Metallica could concentrate on ridding themselves of Bob Rock, maybe they'd produce another album worth two shits.
Not that it would sell. Pissing off millions of Napster fanatics was a Career limiting move.
how can you not have respect for the other guys in the band, even if you dont like them? kurt rips on guitar, and even though lars is a jackass he can play the shit out of the drums. when they were getting ready to do the orchestrated performance a local zine-i'm in the bay area-did an article with the conductor who said he had used a timing device to measure how well lars kept the beat in a few songs. lars was exactly in time throughout every song he tested, all the way through-that is f'n impressive. how many guys do you think are really that in time through solos and what not.

Who's Bob Rock? Does he know Bob Cock?
Metallica is too successful and settled (don't they have wives and kids now?) to ever go back to their old ways. They have no reason to be hungry, angry, or desperate! You can't just play metal or punk well to reach that level of success. You've got to live it, breathe it, and wallow in it. Listen to High on Fire if you want to hear a great metal band in their furious prime.

Listen to the tunes, and look at the picture in "Graven Images." Now you know the glory that is metal!

Bob Rock was the producer that altered their image. He had one success (the black album) and then the rest went downhill. Let's face it guys, load was pretty bad, and reload is so awful it triggers flashbacks in Vietnam vets.
