Memphis was struggling for most of the game. Almost a huge first round upset.

Doh...I bet against MD in one or two of my brackets. Good thing they shut down the 3 point shooters or they wouldn't be winning by this much. Go terps.

Damn I put one of my crappier brackets in the G|A group. 4 for 7, when I've got about a handful, on yahoo and elsewhere, that are 6 of 7. I don't think I have any perfect ones, I had picked BYU to win on all of 'em. Oh well.

So all y'all who picked Memphis to get to the final four over UCONN, are you sweating bullets maybe just a bit now :D ?
I had a feeling they were a paper tiger. They didn't really do much against highly ranked teams before beating up on the rest of the peanut gallery that is Conference USA (disclaimer: I went to Tulane). Just that 1 good win against the 'Zags. That's why I picked 'em to go down against Mizzou.

Survive and advance! Can't do much about the competition in conference but they played a pretty tough OOC schedule and completely dismantled Gonzaga not too long ago.

I missed out on the MD game - I picked them to lose. I did pick W.KY and VCU. Although VCU lost - it was so close!
Talk about sweating bullets: someone in one of my work brackets picked Marquette to go all the way.

WTF was he thinking? I had them getting upset in the first round. Missed that one, but not by much.
Does your coworker realize they're strongest player and team leader is out for the season, and, until today, they had only won one game since, and that was like St. Johns or Seton Hall or something like that?

I know. They are either an alum or they were living in a cave the past month. I figured that at least I would not be in last. :P
My Mountaineers just blew it in the first round! They were not the 6-11 upset that I picked! :(

Man, today's games were awesome with the exception of one 6 vs 11 game.
The ACC is down to 3 teams left - UNC, Duke, and MD.
The B10 has Wiscy, MSU, Purdue, and UM left.
The PAC10 still has everyone but Cal.
The BE still has everyone left but WVU. :(
The B12 still has everyone in the tourney.
FYI: By "everyone" I mean everyone of the respective conference's teams that made it to the dance. :)

Seriously. I expected as much from BC and Clemson but was really disappointed in WF and FSU. WF sleep walked through the entire game and FSU choked up a big lead to an offensively inept Wisconsin team. Those teams dropping out early is really a shame too because I think both of them would have matched up very well against the #1 seeds in their respective regions.
In the end, the ACC really boils down to just Duke and UNC. Hopefully those teams will be able to continue to carry the torch.

Just heard that Dominic James has been cleared to play for Marquette. Since he's been out for over a month he will likely have 0 impact on today's game but if Marquette can advance to the sweet 16 they suddenly become a far more dangerous team with James in the lineup.
Maybe that guy who picked Marquette to win it all had some inside info. :)

Are you serious? That is crazy. I thought he was nowhere near coming back to play. I thought he was like a couple of months plus away from being able to come back. He just had surgery at the end of Feb to repair his foot/toe.

From ESPN:
How are conferences faring?
Conference Teams W-L Sweet 16
Big East 7 11-2 5
Big Ten 7 6-5 2
ACC 7 5-5 2
Big 12 6 9-3 3
Pac-10 6 6-5 1
Atlantic 10 3 3-2 1
SEC 3 1-3 0
Horizon 2 1-2 0
Mountain West 2 0-2 0
Any doubt as to who the best conference is?

This is the first time ever that one conference has put 5 into the sweet 16. In 1985, the Big East put 3 into the FINAL FOUR! Its not out of the question they could match that this year. Possibly even beat it, though that's unlikely.

If the seeding holds true that will happen. There is actually a decent possibility that 4 Big East teams end up in the final four. Louisville, Pitt and UCONN are all #1 seeds in their regions and Syracuse is the #3 seed in the South.

Yeah, of all the teams in the sweet 16, with the possible exception of Arizona, Duke matches up better against Villanova than anyone else. With that said, I still think Villanova will win but it really depends on how both teams are shooting. Since they both depend on the outside shot so much if one team gets hot it could be over quickly.
guiseppewv
03-25-2009, 09:35 AM
I do agree with you on the shooting aspect. If one team gets hot then it could be a long night for the other. With that being said, Duke is overrated this year and they will get bounced by 'Nova. :)
guiseppewv
03-26-2009, 09:24 PM
The ACC lost another team, Duke, three BE teams advance, Pitt, UConn, and Nova, the CUSA lost their only team, Memphis, and Mizzou (B12) advances.

I'm surprised 'Nova crushed Duke like that. But, like I said...
Memphis = Paper Tigers.
One, maybel two quality wins all year, and a poor record against ranked teams this season. I just had a feeling this was a different team than we'd seen in past years.
Pitt squeaked by less easily than I would have liked. If 'Nova beats them my bracket is done.
And I feel even better than when I made my picks that UConn will win it all.

Any question as to which conference is the best conference? :D
I figured Memphis was overrated but then again I thought Dukies was too. I think down the stretch Duke's poor shooting caused them to lose the game but at halftime they were both shooting equally as horrid. Duke was under a lot more pressure because Nova is better defensively and most of the players on the team are a good ball handles. Whereas Duke does not have a lot of good ball handlers which caused them to be more affected by the tough D they were up against.
Anyone have Duke going all the way? A Duke grad I work with had them going all the way.:hehehmm:

Duke had a horrendous shooting night but a lot of that was due to their shot selection. They were not athletic enough on offense to break down Nova off the dribble, penetrate and kick it out for open looks from the 3. As a result, they forced shots and had their worst shooting performance of the season.
That was the least disciplined Duke team I've seen in a long time. Hats off to Nova to frustrating them and forcing them into bad decisions. I'm not surprised Nova won (I picked them to advance :) ) but I am surprised how easily they won.

See my previous post about Duke being a flawed team. No inside presence, no real "go to" scorer. Just a bunch of jump shooters, and for three years straight got bounced on a not so great shooting day. Yesterday being the most awful (I think it was 16-60 as a team). They have a 7 footer who can't block shots and when they get in trouble they stop driving to the basket.
'Nova played a good game and I take nothing from them, but Duke assisted in the loss with no so great decision making. They left a lot of wide open threes on the court. Can't win a game with Scheyer jacking up shot clock ending threes.
Note: Paulus gets in the game and they praise his shooting. After that open jumper he proceeds to make THREE turnovers in a row. Not one announcer said a work. He even got the ball taken from him in the open court and still nothing, he lets Reynolds go by him for a layup and NOTHING. Just amazes me sometimes with the Duke love.
guiseppewv
03-27-2009, 02:30 PM
I thought it was funny that once Nova had the game in hand the announcers were giving them all kind of love. Before that they were getting about a 1 to 10 love ratio with Nova getting the short end of the stick.

I agree on Louisville winning, but I think Ty Law's toe is going to bother him on two days rest, and that Griffith (Griffin?) guy on OK is going to be a beast.

I've learned over the past few years that Tom Izzo just has "it" when it comes to coaching in March. MSU saved my bracket today and made Louisville look silly in the 2nd half.
MSU vs UCONN should be a really good matchup. I think UNC joins the other 3 teams in the final four and ends up playing UCONN in the championship game.
With all of the fanfare the Big East got they ended up with 2 in the final four but only 1 of the #1 seeds from the Big East made it. Without question the best league this year but I don't think you'll see a Big East team cutting the nets down in Detroit.
