View Full Version : Overrated Duke

Nothing makes my day like a Duke loss. The fans and followers of the team are still living in the Laettner days. They have talent but never enough to get them back to where the once were.
No one of real high level talent wants to go there. Yeah they'll win 22-25 games a year, but never really advance in the tournament because they are athletically flawed.
Duke fans, watch how many times Paulus gets beat off the dribble for easy layups. Just like his predecessor "Wojo" he has cement bricks for feet and can't guard anyone on the perimeter.
Great Sunday.

I do agree that Duke is again overrated, however, they aren't the only ones who are overrated. Take a look at the bubble teams for the B10 and ACC. I do wish that Duke, UNC, and Wake would have to play all their NCAA games outside tabacco row. When you have homecourt advantage (or at least in essence homecourt advantage) you have a much easier time winning games.
Penn State [21-10 (10-8), RPI: 63, SOS: 98] - #309 ranked OOC schedule. Best OOC win - RPI No. 119 Mount St. Mary's.
Maryland [18-12 (7-9), RPI: 67, SOS: 29] - pair of RPI sub-100 losses, losing to Morgan State at home and Virginia (last game of the season) on the road.
Virginia Tech [17-13 (7-9), RPI: 62, SOS: 23] Two losses to RPI sub-100 opponents (at Georgia and at Virginia). Lost 6 of their last 7 (they played some tough teams but you still need to win some games)
Miami (FL) [18-11 (7-9), RPI: 53, SOS: 26] - Have one strong W at home against Wake.
Why are these 4 teams being considered? Their bubbles burst.

As much as I love Maryland, their star players for the past several years I think have very big egos. I think Juan Dixon was the best but after that there was a lot of "me me me" in the team. Maryland I think needs more star athletes and maybe 3 point shooters.

Can't speak for PSU but all 3 of those ACC teams are on the outside looking in. Short of a big run in the ACC tourney none of those teams will be in the big dance. It's a shame really because all 3 had plenty of opportunities down the stretch and laid eggs.
With regards to Duke, Coach K has changed his recruiting philosophy in the last 5 years, which has kept them at a consistently high level but hurts them come tourney time. They still get some top talent but don't appear to be recruiting the guys that are 1 and done. If you look back at the teams that have made it to the final four or won the NCAA tourney, they typically have these types of players.
FWIW, this year's Duke team should fair better than those of the past few years. They are far more athletic than they have been the past few seasons.

I only mentioned those 4 teams, and I probably should have chosen a few others, because they were listed on ESPN's bubble watch as having work left to do. Like you said, unless they make a long tourney run they have no chance.

Anybody watching UConn-Syracuse right now? 4th overtime is about to start. They've been going for 3 hours now. What a game.

Dude, it is in 6OT now! Back and forth, back and forth. Half of each team is fouled out.
BTW - Did you catch that awesome win by WVU?

Looks like the Cuse might start to pull away now. They are up 5 which is the largest lead of all the OTs.

This game is going to end a Cuse win after 6 OTs!
UCONN only has 5 players who have not fouled out and 3 of those players have 4 fouls. It is crazy!
edit: It looks like there was another guy on the bench who I forgot about - and it is a good thing he was there b/c another UCONN player fouled out!

Stick a fork in UCONN. They are down by 10 with 20 seconds to go.

Looked like it was an amazing game. WVU should be sitting pretty tonight. It did seem a bit disappointing that many of the starters/stars didn't decide the outcome in the end but I guess those are the breaks when you almost end up playing a whole other bball game.
Hopefully VT can pull off a shocker against UNC and jump back into the NCAA picture.

That was one awesome game. I had planned on going to bed at a reasonable time but the game kept me from going to bed. I am so tired right now!

They played a good game but I think their bubble was burst by UNC.

Yeah. If they had beaten UNC they may have squeezed their way in but they'll end up in the NIT now. Sounds like Maryland did enough to get in though.
