Oscar Mayer Bun-Length (http://brands.kraftfoods.com/oscarmayer/main.aspx?s=product&m=product/product_display&Site=1&Product=4470000077) dogs come in packs of eight.

Hebrew National (http://www.hebrewnational.com/pages/products/franks/beef_franks.jsp) dogs (which are THE BOMB) come in packs of seven. Talk about perpetuation of an old stereotype!

I used to buy Oscar Mayer hot dogs but I noticed something different about it. It tastes awful now. It's sweeter and denser. The coloring is darker. I used to love it with corn or noodles but I can't stand it anymore. It's like new Coke or something.

I like Costco hot dogs now street vendor ones.

hot dogs are sold by weight - usually a pound.
You used to be able to pick up a 10 pack of buns in STL, I dunno if you still can.

If I am making my own hot dogs, I almost always buy National Hebrew or Nathan's. However, if i'm on the streets of NYC it's impossible for me to turn down a couple Sabrett's hot dogs =)

As far as a response to the hot dogs vs. buns question...it's all marketing. that's what i say.

Ahh, the dirty water hot dog (http://www.slashfood.com/2008/06/24/nyc-dirty-water-dogs-are-comfort-on-a-bun/), fabled in song and story...
