anything like vBulletin but free?

I recently started a book club with a bunch of friends. We meet every other week to discuss the readings face to face, but we want to be able to continue the discussions online. Something like vBulletin would be perfect, because it strings comments together under a single "thread" and allows for embedding images within the posts (very important!) but I just realized it's quite expensive.

Any free alternatives?
