So, I've been a PC all my life.

I now own a mac. (I won't say I "am" a mac yet.)

One thing that is bothering me... where the hell is the default image editing application? Is there nothing a basic as "paint" included in the OS, or am I just not looking in the right place?

It is a Core 2 Duo Macbook running Leopard.

Google search points me to tons of options I can download... but I just feel like I must be missing something native to this OS that everyone loves so much...

Oh, you just need to buy Photoshop.

At least that's what everyone I work with thinks. "Can you buy me Photoshop? I need to put a caption on this photo."

I second the photoshop. Let me know if you need it.

Everyone you work with makes LOLCats?

Seriously... I bought Photoshop CS3 for my PC last year. I'm not going to drop the money on another copy for Mac.

Treading questionable ground here... would the license key for my PC version work on a mac version? I.e. if I uninstalled it from my PC, and "obtained" the software for the mac, then used my legal & valid license key to install it... anyone have experience with this?

Anyway back on topic... not sure I am too impressed with the lack of this feature. Sure, give me "Time Machine" on a macbook with one drive, but don't give me an image editor. Makes sense.

Oh well.. at least it isn't Vista.

It depends on what you want to do. You probably have a copy of iPhoto that you can use for very basic photo enhancement/resizing and there's always http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/ for more enhanced stuff

Nope, that would be an extra $79.00 according to the apple website. It doesn't come with the mac by default. Apparently nothing does. Not a big deal... I can download gimp... I'm just still surprised that it isn't part of the OS. I'm still working on the whole "think differently" thing...

Odd. It's come with every mac I've ever bought. Usually you just pay for the new version

I think so... I work for a software development company, so there's really no need for ANYONE here outside of marketing to have Photoshop. Yet I still get the odd random request...

I highly doubt that would work, since Adobe treats them as different products. If you tried your PC serial number on a Mac version, I would be shocked if it accepted it.

Heh, that link pretty much confirms that I was not going crazy...

About Paintbrush
A simple paint program for Mac OS X, reminiscent of Microsoft Paint and Apple’s own now-defunct MacPaint. It provides users with a means to make simple images quickly, something which has been noticeably absent from the Mac for years.

Thanks everyone for your input!

iLife USUALLY comes for free when you purchase a new mac. However, if you're installing it clean from an empty hard drive, it definitely doesn't.

That's what I realized when I was upgrading my hard drive on my own and wanted to just install leopard clean instead of restoring from my factory disk and upgrading.
