Hi all, this is my first time replacing a wax ring on a toilet. I was wondering how important it is to have WD-40 to get the old wax off the bottom of the toilet before I put the new one on? Is there another household cleaner that works just as good if not better? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

it's not that big of a deal... just scrape it off good with a spatula and you're good. I just did it on my toilet and works great.

Wipe it off, replace with a jumbo ring - it'll be more forgiving in the event you don't set the china back down dead-straight.
Get some nylon shims while you're at the home supply place so you can level the bowl when you reset it.

I've never done anything more than scrape off the old wax. Consider any residue that is stuck behind as extra adhesive to help hold the new ring tighter. :)
