Microsoft Corp. says Windows 7, the next version of its computer operating software, will go on sale Oct. 22.

Windows 7, which replaces the much-complained-about Windows Vista, will be available on new PCs. Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, will also sell versions that people can install on existing PCs.

Upgrades will be free for people who buy a new Windows Vista computer shortly before Windows 7 arrives, though Microsoft did not say when the upgrade program begins. Microsoft also didn't say how much Windows 7 will cost.

The availability of Windows 7 in time for the holidays could boost PC sales, which have slowed in the recession.

if they don't over price this OS you see a lot of packages that look like a hard cover book under the old chistmas tree this year.

I guess this means that I'll wait for this before I buy a new computer. Ok, I guess I'm living with my laptop for a couple of more months yet.

I've been using RC and Beta for the last whatever months they've been out and it's really an awesome system. It takes what Vista did well (yes, Vista did things well) and makes it tons better. This will stick around for a while like XP did unless we make something revolutionary for Win 8.

Yes, I said we. I do work for the company :) but I also have an iPhone, many ipods, and a macbook so...

I've been using the beta since it came out, and yesterday upgraded to the RC. I've been pleasantly surprised. I use Ubuntu on my netbook and my machine at work.

I might have a tough decision come November between actually buying W7 vs Ubuntu.

Free upgrades? Probably not for me- I have an OEM Home version of Vista on the computer I built myself.

They'll probably offer free upgrades to anyone who bought Vista within 30 days of 7's release.
