Yes. I think this is totally awesome IF it works. Remember EyeToy for PS2 and PS3 was hyped up to be something like this but it didn't work. My problem is that there's no release date for this, but I hope it's at least before the next E3.
Sony did an amazing job. Rather than doing something like the Wii, they went to the movies and pulled something out from that industry - motion capture. Their controller has a big fluorescent ball at the end of it that the eyetoy captures. Great idea and I hope it works really well.
I think Nintendo sh*t their pants today. While Microsoft and Sony caught up with really good technologies, they mearly enhanced theirs with MotionPlus and introduced a pulse monitor (really Nintendo really?)
Nintendo really put themselves in a huge hole. Even though the Wii is a great system, they've lost the gamer segment. Practically no reputable 3rd party developer will develop for the Wii because it's been labeled as the casual console. EA will only do it but with highly specialized versions of their EA sports lineup. You don't see blockbusters ever going to the Wii anymore. All they get is Cooking Mama 25 and Barbie dress up doll. I'm not saying it doesn't make them loads of money - it does. But the only reason why any serious gamer cares about the Wii are the first party games because that's all it has left. You can tell Nintendo is pumping as many first party games it can - 2 new Mario games? I think they're getting desperate.
I don't think Nintendo has the R&D budget or knowhow to compete with Natal or the EyeToy motion capture technology. I think the only strategy they have left is to pump out good 1st party games. Let's hope Mario Galaxy 2 and that Mario Bros.Wii are good.
I don't think Nintendo lost the gamer segment. They created a new gamer segment with the casual gamer. How many more women are playing video games now because of the Wii? How about adults and the older generations? Microsoft and Sony never would have introduced video games to those demographics. Never.
Nintendo may not be releasing cutting edge technology for the hardcore gamers, but they sure are doing a good job roping in new loyal customers.
