I recently bought coarse oatmeal at Big Lots, the kind that's not instant but you cook on the stovetop in a pot.

I am having a hard time with it sticking to the pot. And once it sticks, it is very hard to clean the pot. Any ideas how to prevent this?

I have nothing to help prevent it from sticking to the pot. All we do is after we've gotten all the goodies out, we fill the pot up with warm water and leave it in the sink. It loosens up the oatmeal plaster, and makes for easier cleaning.

are you talking about steel cut oats?

I toast the oatmeal in butter before I cook em, and that adds extra flavor imo.
but in terms of cooking vessel, I actually use a large 12" nonstick shallow saute pan like this (http://www.amazon.com/Calphalon-Traditional-Anodized-Nonstick-5-Quart/dp/B000MFCF2Y/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1245340885&sr=1-6)

never any stick.

It sometimes sticks on me but if it does I just use the same method as Nija. I find that if you stir it after reducing the heat then you don't have much issue with it sticking.

I use the same method Nija uses to clean my pot after I cook oatmeal if I have anything stuck to the walls of the pot.

I also use a double pot like this (http://www.amazon.com/Innova-Classicor-Stainless-Steel-2-Quart-3-Piece/dp/B0000DJBCB/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1245360478&sr=1-2) one. The one I use is a heavier stainless steel than the one in the link. You fill the bottom pot with water and place the other pot on top and use it to cook the oatmeal, cream of wheat, cocoa wheat, etc...

I cook steel cut oats in my rice cooker, which is non-stick. It slides right out.

Wow. I've never seen Oatmeal cooked in anything but a sauce pan (http://www.amazon.com/Calphalon-Contemporary-Nonstick-2-Quart-Saucepan/dp/B0000936JZ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1245394975&sr=1-5)(similar to that), let alone a rice cooker.

My mind. It is blown.

I put honey and brown sugar into my bowl of oatmeal.

Then I don't give a **** about the pan. :)

i've done the rice cooker, but mines is a pretty simple, cook/warm switch. you have to be careful though because if you use the normal amount of water, the sticky goo is going to start to spit out of the seals and make a bigger mess. you actually have to use a little less water than stovetop but you have to soak the oats in it for at least a 1/2 hour before you start to cook it.
there's the fancy rice cookers that actually have a oatmeal setting, which you don't have to deal with any of that.

Also, for another cooking vessel, you can use a slow cooker like Alton Brown does it here (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/overnight-oatmeal-recipe/index.html)

I ordered a rice cooker yesterday from Newegg. It gets good reviews.
