Hi everyone,

I am wondering which of OS WINME or WIN2K PRO is best suited (fastest) for a laptop (INSPIRON 8000, PIII 700, 192MB SDRAM PC100, 10GB IBM HD, ATI RAGE MOBILE 128 4XAGP, ESS MAESTRO SOUND CARD, ACTIONTECH COMBO MODEM & 10/100 NIC CARD, DVD, INTEL 815 CHIPSET...) and the following applications: 3D modeling small part and assembly (PRO/E, SOLIDEDGE, INVENTOR, IDEAS etc), MEDIA STUDIO PRO video editing (small footage less than 5 minute), WINDVD (movies) and internet. Any insight thought is greatly appreciated.

Without question - W2K. One of the top design goals of W2K was to have it run easily and quickly on a laptop.

However.... 3D modeling and video editing on a laptop? That's another question in of itself....

Definitely Win2k. It is much more stable than WindowsME. Also, with Whistler coming out soon, it will be easier to upgrade. You might want to wait for Whistler.

I have Win2k on my Inspiron 5000e--it rocks! I can disconnect/reconnect the network cables, pull it out of the docking station, swap hardware, etc. w/o even bothering to tell Win2k to "eject hardware" -- it may conplain but it keeps working great. It's very solid--don't even consider ME. I usually don't even reboot it, I just shut the lid and let it hibernate for the night.

Win2k runs very smooth even in my old PII 300 laptop with 64 MB.

Go with Win2k.

Win2k, no question. WinME sucks IMHO though others have had a better experience. Also, on the Win2k vs Whistler question, read this article:

What with all the .NET features that will be in Whistler you know it's going to have problems, and I for one am not going to be a beta tester for M$ like all the original Win95 owners were. :borg: Win2k on the other hand rarely gives me any trouble.

I just got a compaq rig w/the same specs... It came loaded with ME .. I think. :) Didn't even boot it up.

W2k was designed for laptops. It will take longer to boot/shut down, but only several seconds if you keep it lean, although that software doesn't sound very Calista-like.

Does that S/W run (quick enuf) on your vid card? Do you have the M1 or the M3 chipset? Some of the new 8000's have a 32MB vid card, very very nice.

Supposedly theres a mobile Radeon coming out soon too. (if its not out already)
