Need an opinion on apartment decor (and saving for a move)

Since I mystically am single again, I feel a new reorganization of my life and apartment is in order, so I'm throwing about 70% of my furniture (handmedowns) out the door and buying all new stuff, but skitish at doing it.

Before people jump off the deep end on spending, I'm aiming at a budget of about $2800 (Its enough, I've checked pricewise), I have no other significant bills (cars paid off, rent apartment, credit cards have 0 dollars on them, no loans, but only $900 in free cash in the ATM (with another 5k incoming from the job and extra caricular activities before next rent is due in the end of August (which is about $800, yes I paid June and July already).

Here are my two questions:

1) I'll be living at this location till about March of 2010 (next year) then be looking for a new apartment (live in a studio, so will be looking for a large 1 or 2 bedroom next year). I really cannot stand the stuff in my place atm as it really is not me. Would it be a good idea to a) Save the money and buy the furniture when I move and suffer with what I have, or b) buy the furniture now, and make it fit in the new location in 2010?

2) Color schemes (this one is simple), Expresso, Dark Brown, Walnut, and Chocolate. Would those colors in themselves go together (I know its allot of dark colors, but thinking towards the future also).

it sounds like you're moving into a larger space in March, so there will be no fear of you having too much stuff, so I would think go for it.

One caveat though would be that when you get furniture for yourself now, everything's going to follow one continous theme because it's a studio. When you go to 1/2 bedroom place, you won't be able to give each room its own distinctive flavor. the whole house is going to carry the same design scheme. it's good that it flows throughout the whole house, but on the con side, it keeps everything flat. If you get a 2 bedroom (and possibly roomate?) that room, i'm guessing will be totally off, and possibly stick out like a sore thumb.

Seems that is what my friend just said too. She suggested I stuff the money in a CD or something, then go all out and spend 3X the amount when I do move and do the entire apartment at once, and chuck everything that is in the current place (... would save on moving costs I suppose).

and no I won't be doing a roommate.

I personally would save the money for the move until March.

I'd save it till your next place. In the meantime, see if you can get a couch cover or be creative on the cheap with an upholstery makeover.

It'll be better to shop with your newer, bigger place in mind, so you can pick quality furniture that will fit the space.

save until the move. Unless you already know the new location, there's a good chance you'll buy furniture, move into the new place, and realize it just doesn't "fit". Maybe the layout will be drastically different, you'll realize you don't need X cuz you have Y, etc. Then you'll waste money buying new stuff, or will have to force the old stuff into working.

Buying later will also make moving a bit easier - after all, it would suck to buy a nice new couch only to realize that you have to lug it up 3 flights of stairs to the new place, and it won't fit through the door. In our old place, we had to throw our king-sized mattress over the balcony, cuz it wouldn't fit down the short stairway.

If you're really desperate for a chance, a few choice accent pieces can completely change the look of your home, and you can do it for a few hundred or less.

plus like avlena said... you buy it once you move... you only pay to have it moved once..

I would wait till you move just to make the move that much easier. I always try to sell or give away a lot of stuff just before moving. And if I haven't used something since my last move, it must go.

Echoing what everyone else has said, wait until the move. It will save on any moving expenses, make moving far easier on you and also remove any chance of damaging the new future that you just bought.

Agreed with everyone. Why move the same furniture twice? You play delivery on furniture then pay to move it...
