If you're looking to start photography, a 50mm prime lens a good one to have in your arsenal. This lens is the one I whip out with there's not a lot of light and I don't have my flash. While the 50mm F/1.8 is a lot cheaper and one of the best values around, if you can afford it, get the 50mm F1.4. The F1.4 has an ultrasonic motor, full time manual focus mode, better colors, better sharpness, better bokeh, better build quality, and more!
