Which is better? Nikon or Canon?

in my opinion it's all about personal preference.

Canon 30D DSLR & Canon Powershot 850is P&S. Plus a bunch of older ones I don't use anymore.

Canon vs. Nikon is totally user preference - they're both great cameras. Nikon lenses seem to be a little cheaper (cost wise), but next time you're at a professional sporting event, take a look at the sea of Canon lenses that the press photographers are using. That's what keeps me leaning toward Canon rather than Nikon.

there was a time when Canon had much better autofocus speeds which is a high priority for shooting sports. it was about this one technical aspect more than anything. nowadays, nikon has caught up to the point where, for an amateur like you and me, the whole discussion of canon vs. nikon (from a technical perspective) is pointless. The reason there are still more canons on the sidelines of sports events is more likely due to the "momentum" that exists by owning many expensive lenses which are not compatible with other brands.

in the end, my opinion is that, if you have to ask which is better, canon vs. nikon, most likely, either will be good enough for you. if the nature of your work is so important and sensitive that these negligible technical differences matter, you probably shouldn't be looking at mainstream consumer brands like canon or nikon in the first place.

In point and shot cameras, Canon tends to be better than Nikon. Once you move up to a DSLR they both have excellent cameras and accessories. If you are shopping, see which feels most comfortable and that you will actually want to use. I have seen some great photos taken with cell phone cameras too.

Nikon D80
Fujifilm F31fd (converted to shoot in near infrared)
Pentax Optio W10 (for times I may end up getting wet).

Can you still find film for those and get it developed? I bet KMart doesn't do it anymore.
