There is a software backup called "Rebit" http://rebit.com/ that is set it and forget it, you must supply a drive of equal size or greater to your main hard drive. I use Acronis and I would even if I use Rebit, I realize that if you crash and if the crash was caused by a virus, Rebit would restore the drive with the virus, that is one thing that troubles me. Acronis is good but gave me problems when I restored myself, it recovered all data but Windows was corrupt. I don't mind spending some money for the piece of mind especially since I recently recovered from a fatal crash, cost about $25 for Rabit plus the cost of an external drive and I value the opinions from Gotapex...

I use Acronis religiously now. Never had any Windows corruption issues (WinXP Pro) and I backup all of my laptops and desktops manually every few weeks.

I have acronis. I wish the incremental backups were more progressive. I want the daily backups rolled into the weekly incrementals which are rolled into maybe a monthly full copy until my hard drive is full. That way I can restore to yesterday, two days ago, two weeks ago, or last month.

I also think Acronis blurs the line between backups and imaging a bit too thin. They really are distinct functions.

It's also not perfect across a network. It usually stops backing up maybe every 20 gigs or so to say there was an IO error and I just hit retry and it continues just fine.

I might give rebit a try.

What happens when the external drive dies, gets lost, gets stolen, or falls victim to fire/flood, etc.?

Not knocking it, but online/offsite to me is the way to go...

That's why I would also use Acronis. The problem with me, not Acronis, is that I don't do a full Acronis backup on schedules, I do it when I remember about once a month. Rebit will be always be up to date.

I can't imagine how long it would take to upload hundreds of gigs over the net. By then it's a whole new computer.
