Geez, they dumb this software down so much you can't tweak it at all.

I got an iPhone for work (very grateful for the upgrade from the crapberry) but man I hate iTunes. I go to import my music and there weren't any options on which folder I wanted to pick. So then it grabs over 1200 midis and wav files that are meant for my job. I use different audio editors for them and have no need for it cluttering up a music library.

Then I go to sync, and I don't see anywhere on how to sync specific songs. I can sync by playlist, genre and artist. I just want a few songs by that person, not the whole score. I promise you some Metallica doesn't belong on any ipod. :boxing:

Any idea how to keep iTunes from getting overzealous? Or am I doomed to being treated like a sheep with no free will of my own?

Or am I doomed to being treated like a sheep with no free will of my own?

What did you expect with Apple products?

I know. Believe me, I know.

File
Add folder to Library

That's how I have imported my entire (personal) music drive. That way you should only include what folders you want imported, which should help with the whole don't-include-my-work-stuffs problem.

I don't have an iPhone and I've never synch'd anything, so I can't help you there.

It's a huge pain in the ass, and to make it worse it's different from device to device.

I have 5 different ipods between everyone in my family, and some you can drag songs, some you must create playlists, and some you can even drag a file from windows explorer onto the device in itunes & it'll copy.

For the iphone, I found it easiest to create a single playlist and then just drag whatever music I want into that. Then I just sync that one playlist.

Don't even get me started on the whole tethering business, either. I almost threw my phone against the wall when they disabled tethering in 3.1.

Somewhat of a thread hijack here, but am curious if mDNSResponder.exe and APPLEMobileDeviceService.exe needs to run all the time on my computer? I have other similiar other complaints since buying 2 Ipods of different generations for 2 of my kids, but am more annoyed to have more crap running all the time. I don't see anything Apple in the startup list in Msconfig.
I get a kick out of all the crap over the years about Microsoft being too proprietary and evil. For me Apple is infinitely worse, and charges a premium for it.

in syncing, i just do everything manually. i tell it that i don't want to sync automatically, and that i will do it manually. that seemed to help me.

i still hate apple for ruining my neatly laid out folder structure that I had made. put into my genres/artists (included mixes that were mult artists)/albums.

ruined all that and moved around all of my files into the standard artist/albumb structure. pissed me off so much... it's sitll in a disarray... :(

Here's a trick that I used when using iTunes:

Set up syncing by playlist.

Make playlists of any complete albums or compilations you want to add to your device.

Then, use (or make) the "My Favorites" smart playlist. I had it set up so any song I rated 3 stars or above would end up on the playlist.

This way you can have all of the albums you like added as complete playlists, and any individual songs added by rating them a 3 star or higher.

I think there's a way to completely manually sync as well (with check marks next to the song), but I never tried that.
