The Netherlands: Parked Truck Receives 45 Automated Speeding Tickets
A stationary vehicle was accused by a speed camera in The Netherlands of speeding 45 times in one afternoon.

Dutch lumber merchant Martin Robben no longer believes that the speed camera never lies. As reported by De Telegraaf, the man was falsely accused of speeding forty-five times on August 25 while his vehicle, a commercial truck, was parked on the side of the road in Oldeberkoop village.

"Sometimes there were only three seconds between the tickets," Robben told the Dutch paper. "That's impossible... Nobody can be flashed dozens of times in an afternoon."

As is the common practice in Europe, tickets sent in the mail do not include photographs of the alleged offense, just a demand for payment. In Robben's case, the demand amounted to thousands of euros, which forced him to retain the law firm of Anker and Anker to help him prove his own innocence. Defendants must make a special request to see the evidence against them.

The Netherlands is home to Gatsometer, the premier manufacturer of speed cameras worldwide. The same device that falsely accused Robben is currently used in a number of US cities, including Silver Spring, Maryland. Speed cameras around the world have accused stationary vehicles of speeding, as documented in Australia as well as France and the UK.

:heh: I like how accurate these cameras are!

This story also makes me glad that I live in the US.

It happens here, too:

'X' man's tag leads to more than $19,000 in Birmingham parking tickets (http://blog.al.com/live/2009/10/x_mans_tag_leads_to_more_than.html)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- For Huntsville resident Scottie Roberson, the letter X -- seven of them to be exact -- led to more than $19,000 in Birmingham parking tickets.

Roberson, who said he has been to Birmingham only once in the last five years and left without a ticket, said he was told by city officials the tickets were issued by mistake because of his vanity plate -- XXXXXXX.

i despise the intrusion of speed cams and red light cams into our lives.

have you guys been in phoenix recently? It's like a police state there. Traffic cams and speed cams everywhere. It feels very unpleasant.

I apparently got tagged by one in Phoenix in August. Hertz sent me notification that they received a ticket, and they apparently told the authorities that I was the one who rented the car. I've received no notification from the authorities, though. From what I understand, I can ignore anything they mail to me. It does not count as being properly served. They then have 120 days to track me down and properly serve me in person. Good luck with that while I'm 2000 miles away (Of course, I'm knocking on wood now, too).

Yeah, well, that's what happens when you have a state full of cranky old people.

I was happy when red light cams were found unconstitutional here a few years back, yet I notice that they are still installing them - just in case, I guess. Even though they've only been proven to increase revenue, not safety.

Well, traffic cops don't enforce safety rules, they generate revenue. Why would traffic cams be any different?
