There is a DirectX 8a.
Microsoft has released an update of DirectX 8. This is a DirectX 8.0a redistrubtion package for their developers. The slightly new version (8.0a) has some minor additions or fixes I should say. The download weighs in at a large 25mb. So you might want to wait awhile until Microsoft adds it to their DirectX 8 pages. Or if you are the die hard in mind and want the latest in everything. Here is the scoop:

Release Notes:
- Fixes issues with international installs on Windows 2000
- Fixes issues where input devices could have buttons disabled that
- were enabled with previous DirectX releases
- The DirectX 8.0a Redist download supports Win95, Win98, WinME, & Win2k
