about a month ago I bought a new desktop which came with Windows Vista installed. Through a promotion I got a free upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. I ordered the Win 7 upgrade CD and after installing it I lost the CD as we were moving to a new office. Thus, I wasn't able to activate the product and my computer is supposed to get locked down later today as it has reached the 30 day deadline.

My question. I was kinda wanting to upgrade to Win 7 Ultimate anyway. Can I buy a Win 7 Ultimate upgrade pack and upgrade even though my current copy (Home Premium ) is not activated?

i would think so. Your vista copy was legitimate. I don't see why it would be a problem.

Hmm. I went across the street to the best buy to buy the Home Premium to Professional "anytime upgrade" kit and the geek squad guy said it wouldn't work if my current win 7 installation isn't activated. Having read so many horror stories about incompetent Geek Squad personnel, I was kinda suspicious, but took his word for it. With 2 hours left on the "lock down" clock and many more hours left on an important project deadline, I managed to find this article on how to extend your 30 day activation deadline to 120 days, just in the nick of time.

That gave me some more time to contact my computer manufacturer and ask for a new product key. As long as I had my computer Serial No I should be able to get a new one. So far, it seems like everything worked out (got the project done in time). We'll see how it goes.

Ask Google before you ask the Geek Squad, or any other kids with no tech experience who make $8/hr
