is it a british thing? and does it only refer to men's underwear? just boxers? just briefs?

Heh... down South we call 'em "draws".
But to answer your question, the term "drawers" in referencing underwear refers to the act of "drawing in" the garment to fit close to the body (early underwear probably had draw strings attached). Hence the term "drawers" was coined to refer to the garment.
Drawers usually refers to "men's undergarments". In today's use of the word, "drawers" can refer to boxers or briefs. (As my momma would always remind me to "get your dirty draws off the floor and put them in the dirty clothes hamper.") :hihi:

Drawers usually refers to "men's undergarments".
Yea, I only remember grandma calling them draws...but I think whenever she was talking about womens unnderwear she called them "bloomers"
BTW grandma was italian
