In a fit of weakness on Monday i ordered the Nexus One, the dock and a spare battery... On Tuesday my need for instant gratification was soothed at 9:48 am.

On Wednesday my iphone hit Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130371571032&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_500wt_1182).

So far i love the android operating system. For some reason it feels more open and customizable than the iphone software. Menus are quicker to get to and there are some great little built in hotkeys which just make the phone a pleasure to use. Specifically there's a built-in widget that has 5 options.
1. Wifi
2. bluetooth
3. GPS
4. Active-sync
5. Auto brightness

So one click turns them on and one click turns them off. They are super easy to access and if you've ever had to switch something on with the iphone it takes a bit more than just tapping a key on the homescreen...

The home screens are fully customizable with widgets, shortcuts and apps, along with the wallpaper and some pretty cool live wallpapers (which currently i'm warping through space on my phone)

At present every app i had on my iphone that i liked and used is available on Android, which i was somewhat surprised considering i've heard its relatively limited. I've found that not to be the case. Although i'm not a phone gamer so take that with a grain of salt.

Contacts, calendars all sync up quick with the google equivalents and it's super easy to sync your outlook with gmail and google calendar. The phone also has support for M$ exchange.

One of the coolest functions i've run into so far is the notifications bar. At the top of all phones you know how they have the signal and battery indicator? Well this one has a space on the left that tells you when stuff comes in, not only that but you can drag the bar down and it gives you a listing off all new alerts and detailed info on them.

The haptic buttons at the bottom work really well and i didn't realize how nice they would be to have going from the 1 button solution to something that can actually do multiple things... The keys punch a little higher than the icon which i can't figure why people are complaining, when you're holding the phone with one hand your thumb almost always hits the key in the right spot... but tapping on them when the phone is sitting on a surface you do have to aim high.

It runs all the stuff you want it to and keeps most of it running the background. I would recommend a free app killer to save battery life.

Battery life seems to be on par with the iphone. I was hoping it would be a little better and it is slightly but i also don't have 3g web which drains the battery faster, also my router blew up so i'm not using wifi either.

Overall the phone feels FAST and responds well, androids physics aren't quite as polished as apple but they're pretty good. The screen is amazing! Color depth and clarity are all far superior. Great upgrade for me and i'm pumped to be out from under apple's clutches :)

I'll write more when i get some more time with the phone. So far it's been a breeze and pretty intuitive to use.

Yep. Android is great. The Nexus One looks like nice hardware, but I need a physical keyboard, thus my Droid.

^ I've always been partial to virtual keyboards and this one is ok at this point. I remember the iphone taking quite awhile to get used to and this one will probably be the same. I ended being able to type ridiculously fast on that thing. I hope the same will be true for this phone.

The droid is great too :)

that worries me. there's rumors that nexus one is hitting verizon at the end of the month, and I need to get a new phone soon. I'm debating between the droid and the nexus one...

what do you guys think?

At the end of the day it comes down mostly to hardware keyboard preference. I need one so for me it's no contest. If you don't think you'd use it, then the Nexus One should be your choice probably.

I think Android is great, but Sprint only carries a couple Android phones at the moment. Like Airen, I need a physical keyboard and I have been extremely happy with my Crackberry. My contract is expired, but i want to remain on sprint. So I will be looking at the next gen Android phones and the blackberry slider that is rumored to be coming soon (touchscreen with slide out keyboard).

My buddy has a Moment and it's a nice device, but it just isn't as nice as my Droid.

Yeah, I played around with the Moment but wasn't that impressed with it. I think with any firstgen device it's always going to end up like that. Hopefully the new flurry of devices will be enticing enough for me to finally get a new phone.

I was thinking about heading to sprint, they have some pretty money android phones and cheap rate plans. But alas, i went with the droid, but the rate plans are killing me!

I stay with Sprint because their plans are the cheapest, and with my employer discount i'm getting 450 anytime, unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited texting & unlimited data, & blackberry internet services for only ~$57/month.

Net10 phone, $15 per month. I have minimal needs and low standards. It meets that perfectly. :D

I played some physics game on a buddy's droid. I have never felt like such a nerd as the moment I realized I was playing a video game in a bar on new years eve and ignoring my wife.

For those debating the Nexus One but want the physical keyboard, the Nexus Two is supposed to have a physical keyboard, but from the rumors I've read up on, it won't come out for another year. Also, check out the hardware difference on the Droid vs. N1. You really can't touch the Snapdraggon processor. I have also heard the N1 comes to Verizon at the end of March. I was really confused about this phone because I thought it was supposed to be called the HTC Passion, when it was leaked back in October. Apparently there's an HTC Desire as well, which will be almost an identical phone.

Check out all the Android stuff coming out...

This past weekend my dad was having surgery. My phone is 3 years old and the battery doesn't consistently charged. So I got the HTC Hero for Sprint for a 30 day trial. My current phone is also on the Sprint network. The Hero didn't get that much better reception than my regular phone both of which were drained just because the hospital doesn't get good reception and the lead walls. The Hero takes forever to power on and for some reason when I needed to call my family ASAP I couldn't get to the contacts list until I got reception and Android completed loading. So I had to switch to my dumbphone to get the numbers. The Android took me a few more steps to find who called me and check voicemail. The whole physical menu button for every software app was annoying. The Android version is 1.5 by the way.

After my experience in the hospital I'm going to return the android. I needed a phone that worked fast so I could make important calls to family and doctors. This Android phone failed me. I'm sure if I got used to it and became more familiar with the layout it would have become second nature. The Sprint network was also disappointing because I saw a few people with iPhones and the Droid calling in rooms I had no bars. They weren't without issues because I could see they had dropped calls but some of them resorted to text msgs instead.

That's my two cents worth. I'm getting a new phone this afternoon and possibly going to another carrier. I have 2 more surgeries coming up for my dad and I need to be in contact with family and doctors for new few weeks.

The difference in processing power isn't as pronounced as they'd have you think. Also the Droid has more RAM if I remember correctly and the screen is higher resolution.

That being said, the snapdragon is cool, but I don't think that the processor alone is worth ditching a hardware keyboard.

:)

I'm orderign the ATT version tomorrow or maybe the next day once i get some reports from users of the new version. The t-mobile one can be sent back w/i 30 days if you live in CA, which i do less a $45 restocking fee.

I think this will work out better for me long term b/c i actually priced plans and ATT is still cheaper than t-mobile even with their un-sub plans... crazy huh?

you'd have to pay me to use verizon... their network may be better but CDMA is low tech and will be disappearing soon enough. You can't use voice and data at the same time either... and i need GSM for when i travel out of the country. Maybe if verizon got their act together i'd consider it, but i typically don't like to support companies who hang on to low tech solutions.

How? For T-Mobile, the non-subsidized plan (EM+) is $60 for 500 anytime minutes, unlimited NW & M2M, unlimited data, and unlimited message.

Remember if you are using the Nexus One on AT&T, the data plan will be $30 regardless of which version you use (AT&T 3G compatible or T-Mobile 3G compatible).

Well for starters i'd have to have a family plan.

so it's $70 for talk and unlim text and then i'd add data of $25. I thought it was data of $10 when i was initially making inquiries but the data for this phone is $25... so yeah not really competitive.

so it would be $95 plus taxes which would take me up to ~$105

Right now w/ ATT i'm paying my iphone plan with a family plan tagged on w/ 200 text for each of us and data for me. It's currently $92 with all the taxes and fees per month. We get a discount through my wife's work of like 10% i wasn't able to find a similar discount on t-mobile or it would have probably been cheaper.

Check out the Palm Pre then. Slide out keyboard, very customizable with PreWare installed, and I believe it might be the most open OS out there.

Android is more open. Wikipedia describes WebOS as "Closed Sources with some open aspects."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebOS

Larger ecosystem as well. I have no particular beef against Palm or WebOS, but I'm fairly sure Android is more open.

However if you want the pinnacle in openness, the Nokia N900 is hard to beat. Too bad it's only for T-Mobile.
