So if you use a 64 bit edition of the Windows 7 software, would this prevent you from using software written for the 32 bit version? Or are there certain qualifications that you must do to make them run?

I've never used a 64 bit version of the O/S before, but I am considering it with a new PC build that I am working on. I'm just slightly afraid that some of my software won't run on this new build.

Windows 7 64-bit version will run 32-bit applications using a built-in emulator. I have been running Windows 7 64-bit on two desktop PCs and have had no problems whatsoever with 32-bit applications. In fact, I think i only have a couple applications that are 64-bit.

This website has a very very good article on what you're asking:

Im on win 7 at work now, its great. Thoughpart of that upgrade is that im running VMWare and most apps in a XP VM so I can easily backup and get up and running quickly if my drive dies.

Have a copy I bought for home, but havnt upgraded yet...need to upgrade some hardware first (2 small drives for OS in raid 1, a sata card, and at a later date a video card)

Well my new system is up and running now... with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

So far, so good... although I really haven't had a chance to load everything on it yet.

And that's why I suggest VMs. No need to reinstall applications
