We have one trash bin and one recycle bin (both the same size - I think 90 gallon) that we are provided with. Supposedly, we can get unlimited pickup of recycleable materials. Any extra trash beyond the one bin requires an extra ($) sticker. We try to put most paper, glass, cardboard, etc. into the recycle container to avoid overflowing our trash container.

my wife and i take all the cans and bottles to get the redemptive value back.
unfortunately, Hawaii's home recycling program is a bit restrictive, like only certain types of recyclable plastics will be taken. no styrofoam or non-corrugated paper box kind of stuff.

Im fined if my tenants dont recycle, and there are plenty of sanitation police in NYC. I actually pay a guy to sort the trash they refuse to.
As for me I have 3 small trash cans in my kitchen making it very easy.
Returnable bottles and cans which are a rarity I put in a seperate plastic grocery bag and hang it on the fence for the people who go around collecting them. The $0.15 a month id get back isnt worth the trip, and the one time I did do a larger return (a whopping $0.85) I lost the receipt ticket by the time I got to the cash register with my groceries.
