Upgrading HDs on a RAID 10 system

Hello,

I'm trying to upgrade 1TB HDs to 2TB HDs. The system that I want to do this on has a RAID 10 configuration.

What is an easy way for me to do this without reloading the OS....which is Vista 64bit.

I have access to Norton Ghost for this process if necessary.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Not sure if Ghost supports RAID arrays (let alone a RAID 10), but if it does, that would be your best bet. I'm quite certain you can't just upgrade one drive at a time in a RAID 10 array.

Yeah, you'll have to back it up, rebuild the RAID with the new disks & then restore it. Do you have something big enough to hold the image?

By backup you mean the entire works? Since it's 4 1TB drives, I'm going to have to back up 2TB? If so, this brings up another question. Does it matter if it's the whole 2TB, even if say only several gigs were being used?

I'll check to see if Ghost 14 supports RAID. Is there any application you do suggest for backing up RAID arrays?

You only need room for the data being used... so if you're using 1.5 out of the 2TB, you only need room to back up the 1.5.

I use Symantec BackupExec for our RAID machines, but if this is a personal machine I doubt you'll want to spend that kind of $$ on backup software. I don't know of any cheap image/backup software that supports RAID - maybe someone else has a suggestion?

Not exactly the same situation, but I recently noticed that one of my Raid 1 drives had failed. (The system still boots and runs off the good drive.) I contacted Western Digital and they're sending me a replacement drive. I did some research on the utilities supplied by my motherboard manufacturer (Gigabyte), and they have one that is supposed to take care of syncing up the replacement drive with the existing good drive to restore the Raid 1 configuration. So check with your raid controller manufacturer to see if they have anything that might help.

Thanks for the info. I have seen that there are several forums out there about upgrading RAID 1 and RAID 0 configurations. Could my situation be like one or both of those? Do you think it would really matter differently for a RAID 10 config?
