So I needed to download pics off of my brand new digital camera to my 3-year-old macbook pro. I rummage through my drawers and find a super old USB cable (small plug on one side). I plug it in and get a warning "Your device may perform faster if you use USB 2.0 blah blah." The two connecting devices are clearly USB 2.0 capable. Is there such a thing as a USB 1.0-only cable? I've googled it and there seem to be conflicting information on question boards.

There is a difference - I think USB 2.0 cables might be shielded vs. USB 1.0 cables not.

Back when USB 2.0 devices first started coming out I remember seeing this fairly often with older cables.
