hey guys,

so i can get either the droid incredible or the droid x. anyone have experience with one or the other that can give me some hands-on advice? size isn't an issue, and either is price.

thanks! :)

Or you could wait for the Droid 2 and have a physical keyboard.

physical keyboards are for the weak.

Or those of us that use connectbot a lot.

I've heard many say this. Not necessarily just for the keyboard though.

It all depends on what you want from the phone.

true. the most common reason i've heard people are looking forward to the droid 2 is the more manageable size of the handset. But I guess OP said size wasn't an issue.

if i was in the market i'd probably get the droid X, however i'm not and i'm enjoying my nexus one w/ my free tethering :)

the incredible = nexus one.

I like the bigger size of the droid x and i think the 4.3 in screen is just awesome.

have you looked at the galaxy S variant for VZW?

except with the HTC Sense stuff, right?

i've searched for it, but haven't found any solid reviews of it. heard it's coming out this fall?

htc sense and an 8 megapixel camera instead of 5mpx.

each carrier will have a variant of the galaxy S and i believe sprint is the only one with a physical keyboard. If you want read the review of the att captivate. It's currently out an available.

the one thing that pisses me off the most about buying carrier phones is that is just rewards bad behavior... the galaxy S actually has a front facing camera but on most of the carrier specific phones they've disabled it... i think actually all of them have. It's this huge fight getting them to innovate and all they want to do is leak stuff out to you over years and years and years.

That's one of the reasons i got the nexus one. It doesn't have any carrier bloat **** on it and i can do anything i want with the phone. It's mine and i just use ATT for contracted data and voice. That's the way it should be. With their current model they don't have to innovate their features for their network or even compete based on price. All they have to do is lock in and lock down handsets and that's how they compete. It's bull**** and it's bad for the consumer and it's horrible rigged "free market" competition. I'm actually surprised no one has done anything about it or raised a stink b/c it's about the most anti-competitive business out there. They're innovating and competing based on a product they don't even create or sell!! How the hell can we expect to get better free market results if the carriers are allowed to compete based on a product they don't sell? It's horrific.

Google made a huge mistake by not putting it in best buy... and instead tried to bring the carriers online which they certainly didn't want to do. Now we're back to the carrier locked model and now the droid X has something called eFuse on it so it's incredibly hard to root and put custom roms on it. I don't even know if it's been done. I'm sure it was put there at the request of VZW... so people can't root it and use the tethering for free. Oh well we get what we pay for and we're sucking up the carriers phones so that's the way it is.

Actually Sprint version aka EPIC 4G is a Samsung Galaxy S Pro with front facing camera, camera flash, and keyboard. The other versions (T-Mobile Vibrant, AT&T Captivate, and Verizon Fascinate) are without camera flash (same as the original Galaxy S) and front facing camera removed.

One thing with Samsung is that its supports suck. You will never know if this is ever going to be upgraded to Froyo (2.2). The non-carrier branded Galaxy S will be upgraded to Froyo next month I think.

based on how quickly sprint worked to get the Evo upgrade to Froyo (tomorrow), I think at least their version of the Galaxy will get Froyo.

I was reading up on this the other day. I believe the Galaxy update is scheduled for September. LPM, did you get your Froyo update yet? I checked for HTC updates and found none.

LPMiller

did you put in the leaked update from Friday? If you did, you'll have to wait a few days for HTC to fix a bug the prevents updating. Otherwise, reboot your phone.

That's for the unbranded Galaxy S.

Actually I got froyo about 5 minutes after I posted that. It took about 30 minutes OTA on a shoddy base in Indiana. Actually I have not noticed a large difference yet.

Most of the changes are on the back end. It's a smaller OS, taking up less space on the phone. It's more efficient, a little faster, that sort of thing. Some better integration in the OS.

I'm with LPM on that one. I haven't noticed a huge difference. The only gripe I have is that I have to force close the camera a lot. I do like how easy it is to attach something via text.

I'm on the fence for the X and currently have an EnV2. Do you find it's just... big? I was in Sam's and they had the VZ Galaxy and Droid 2. The Galaxy was super light, but I've read a few stories about how Verizon bastardized their version. The Droid 2 was pretty solid but I don't think I really need a physical keyboard.

it does command a presence compared to other phones, but is surprisingly svelte for it's size. it takes some getting used to placing in pant pockets, but i hardly can tell the difference anymore. the size is normal to me now and it does feel very solid, much more than the incredible.

the bump on the back helps me hold the phone better, too. some people don't like the physical buttons on the front, but i happen to like them. on the down side, the photos are NOT great in low light conditions. i can play with the exposure levels, but it can wash out the photos. but in general, the photos do turn out well for a camera phone. the battery life has been great (used it throughout the day today making phone calls, playing pandora, accessing websites, texting, and e-mailing) and the battery is still at 40% at 8PM.

overall, i do recommend it. i'm not the biggest Google fan and it's REALLY hard to not want to use all of their free apps. in fact, i had to use the translate app because my office's assigned translator was out of town, and it worked really well. i hate moral dilemmas. :P

I just got a Droid 2 about 3 weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. I prefer the physical keyboard due to my larger hands. One of my coworkers has the original Droid and he's thinking about upgrading now with the nice changes and better battery life in the deuce.

very cool!

i love android and i'm glad other people are getting to try it's open environment.

I am a little concerned about some of the new carriers/manufacturers dropping efuse and a few other things onto the phones to keep them locked down but i guess that's the way it is for now...

kimchicowboy

as an OS, i totally dig android over iOS. i like having the additional buttons. i like that there is a file system you can access out of the box. i don't like the invasiveness, but it is what it is (for now).

I don't really prefer one OS over the other, they both have their cool bits. And both of them are leaps and bounds above the Nokia OS or Windows, even the new 7.

But I will say, having used my phone now since June, Google really is great about taking a bright idea and getting it out there right away, no waiting. They don't often announce something then release it 8 months later.

Angry Birds is out in the market now, for free. Don't be a fool and not get it.

nope, haven't rooted my X. frankly, it scares me. hahaha.

and angry birds it sort of meh to me. it's very similar to "crush the castle" on the iphone, just cuter.
