yo yo yo.

so my roommate and i share a roadrunner connection. it was going into an older linksys non-wireless router (think blue one from several years back). starting about two months ago, my connection would just come to a halt randomly, and be down for over 30 minutes. i'd come back later, it'd be working, and then again, just come to a halt. roommate said he wasn't having any problems.

i call roadrunner and they say there aren't any problems with the network to the modem so far as they can tell.

i take my iMac to the genius bar, leave it overnight, and they tell me there are no hardware problems at all.

i replace the modem and picked up a d-link DIR-655 wireless N router (got pretty good reviews). internet is working great.

fast forward to last week and the network is slowing down big time. pinging a local server in honolulu at 56ms. this is both wireless and wired to the router. roommate does download large files via torrent, but he hasn't been having any problems web browsing. i have trouble having youtube videos starting. heck, i think my wife's 3G service is faster.

biggest thing is just connecting to a website. it'll be "looking up..." for the longest time, then finally connect.

so...my tech gurus. any ideas? cat 5 cables have been replaced, modem replaced, router replaced, both wired and wireless hardware checks out.

thanks for any help!

That would be my 1st suspicion. If his computer is OFF, do you get the same issues?

second guess would be DNS...try setting up your PC to an OpenDNS server

changing the DNS servers seemed to help. i'll keep it going to see how it does in the long run.

thanks guys!

Even though youre not using wireless for future reference, keep in mind wireless has been an issue with roommates in the past for macs. I hope its been resolved in the past year, but 2 different roommates with macbook pros could not keep a stable connection to a linksys running a stable version of DD-WRT but had no problem when connected by cat5 or wirelessly to an airport which was hooked up to my linksys
