I neighbor burned a few albums on a DVD+R disc. I saw him do it and saw the files on his computer on the disc after he finished. I put it in my computer and it shows the disc as empty, and I tried it in our van and it reads and ejects as though nothing is there. ANy thoughts on what may have happened, or if there is something I need to do to get it running?
Thanks

What program did they use to burn the disc? Does Windows report the disc as being blank when you right-click the drive and select Properties?

Also, bear in mind that your van may only have a CD player, so it may not even be able to read the DVD+R.

Doh, I didn't even think about that for the van. That probably explains the van. I'm pretty sure he used I-Tunes, and I have it on my computer. The disc shows empty under properties, so I guess that means the obvious. I saw him doing the burn, and saw the files when he was done. Only thing I can think is he accidently picked up a different disc than the one he burned. I haven't seen him this week, but I'll check with him.

hey may not have closed the disc:

Do I need to close or finalize my disc when I'm done burning?
Not necessarily. Closing a disc session makes the disc compatible with other computers, but not all discs need to be closed. You only need to close CD-R, DVD-R, and DVD+R discs. Rewriteable discs (which end in RW) don't need to be closed. In addition, discs that have not been closed can still be used in other disc burners. They can't be used in CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives, however.

Some programs might offer to finalize your disc instead of closing the current session. A disc that has been finalized is complete, and you can't add any more files to it. If you close the current session, however, you can add more files as long as you have room on the disc.

Mastered discs do not need to be closed; they are automatically compatible with other computers, so you will never see an option to close a session that you have made with the Mastered format. If you are burning a Live File System disc, however, you will need to close the current session to be able to use the disc in another computer or player (by default, Windows does this automatically when you eject the disc). Keep in mind that each time you close a disc session, some of the disc's space is used, so it's a good idea to only close a disc session if you expect to use the disc in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive of another computer. If the disc will remain in your current computer, you don't have to close the disc session.

Ok, Thanks attgig. It is a DVD+R, so maybe that is the problem. I'm not sure fron the reference whether you should still be able to see the files, even if it wasn't closed. I still haven't seen my neighbor, but I will see if he can put it in his computer and see if the files show on his computer. I didn't even think to check microsoft. I need to learn how to search better. My Dad who drives me nuts some days calling about fixing this and that with his computer is better at searching for answers on the internet than I am. A skill I need to learn.
Thanks again

It sounded like an issue with closing discs, and so, that was my initial gut feeling. i just googled closing discs and that brought me to microsoft's site.

If you didn't know to google about closing discs, it may have been a little harder to find a solution on the web.

let us know if that was the issue, and if you were able to get that fixed.

Ok, apparently it was nothing more evil than way too much beer and booze. He said he thought he recorded it also, but nothing showed on his computer either. We were drinking like fish, so that probably is the reason why we both thought all was going as planned, when in fact we were just playing the music and not burning it. It was a crappy anniversary for him in his life(his son passed away a year previous) which is why we were tending toward blind drunk. Not that I need to justify on the obvious anonymous internet forum, but I like this place and guess I don't want to wear out my welcome simply because I can be an idiot at times.
Thanks for the ideas, and sorry I didn't think about the obvious possibility of blind drunkeness.

those are the best problems to solve in computers - user error, in this case, user-blind-drunkeness :hihi:

no need to appologize for drinking
