Dont buy it, rent it instead. I was recommended this title by a friend who thinks every halfway decent game is gold. I swear I wanted to scream at him during the whole time I played it. The following are direct quotes: "Its a pure 9. Outstanding!" he said. "Crushes Castlevania!" he claimed. "The story and acting are amazing; the originality superb!"
I have officially now written off his opinion as something rarely to be taken accurately. Not because of this game but because hes burned me before on other suggestions.
Enslaved is not a bad game by any means, its just lazily designed. The story is very shallow much like the characters it includes. It is supposed to be loosely based on the Chinese tale of the monkey hero with a sci fi twist. It fails in telling any real story outside of a meandering escort mission. The combat is functional but repetitive and becomes tedious because of the games simple fight then explore then fight again structure. His combat upgrades are weak and along with a broken counter attack function makes one wonder which age group they were going for. Platforming is a mixed bag, hopping from perch to perch is flawless but when you want to jump 8 feet to the ground or over something waist high you are restricted forcing you to climb 20 yards around. Very lazy design in my opinion since climbing is a major gameplay element. The only thing outstanding are the environments. I would shake the art director's hand and tell him his talents were wasted on this development team because of its mediocre effort.
Its going to be very disappointing if this is the kind of effort that Ninja Theory will put in for Devil May Cry.
