I've watched Scott Pilgrim VS the World (My first Cult Classic Movie) about 1000 times and now I want to play the bass guitar. I used to play the flute from Junior High through High School (own my own but haven't practiced). I already ordered one (basic beginner electric 4 string bass for about $100 from Guitar World, nothing crazy). Here are my questions..

1) I think I have a basis for learning the Bass, but are there any programs that anybody could recommend for learning it (YouTube emulation won't work).

2) What do music teacher's cost? I am considering finding one, but I need a basis for how much to expect to spend on one (In the Metro NY area, so there are TONS of people around).

3) I'm actually intending to utilize it as a means of social expression, which basically means I'll have to get good enough to get into a really REALLY bad band. I don't have a bunch of music hippies atm.. but anybody here have a social band they rock out with?

Thanks. Aiming at about a year and my goal is to play about 8 songs fully (simple rock like songs that sound good on stage). I also know that I will stick with something as long as I have a goal to aim for, the simplicity of wanting to learn does not work for me.

did you get an electric bass guitar? or acoustic? if you got an electric, make sure you have an amp.

as for learning. no clue on what programs, but i kinda got passable at bass by playing guitar (bottom 4 strings of guitar are same as bass).
from my experience, music teachers costed 30 bucks or more at music stores, but i'm sure you can find random joe blows on craigslist for a bit less.
and i have a friend who's picking up the accordian in brooklyn and wants to form a bluegrass band :-P haha.

I'd ask around a bit. I play the acoustic guitar and was thinking about some electric lessons. I asked some friends who play in bands and they'll usually go for about 10 bucks for a half hour if they like you. Haven't taken them up on it yet though. I've never really been in a band, but I had a good friend I used to make some music with. We'd record a song with me on the acoustic and vocals and him on the drums, then we'd do it again with the bass and electric and splice them together. It's fun to have an mp3 on your computer that you made :)
