I recently got a new laptop at work, and I'd like to automate transferring some of the settings/tweaks/files I have on my old laptop. It seems like every time I get a new laptop, I always forget something.
Anyone know of a good program or batch file to help with this? (I'm copying to and from windows 7)

Fabs autobackup works great from what I hear, though I havnt used it yet. It cant do from one OS to another (7 -> XP or XP -> 7) but since your going 7 -> 7 it should be fine.

Windows Easy Transfer is the shizz...

I went from my old HD and XP to a much larger HD and 7. I dual-booted at first to be prudent, and WET got all of my settings, email accounts, Outlook addresses, etc. from the XP install just fine.

Of course, I'm the one that gets the impassable issue.

and I quote...
Windows Easy Transfer may not connect to your other computer if a certain Winsock LPS is installed in Windows 7. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows 7.
To work around this issue, use other transfer methods instead of using a network connection to transfer your data. To do this, run the Windows Easy Transfer wizard, and then click An Easy Transfer cable or An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
Microsoft, quit trying to be apple. Don't try for simple, just shoot for "get the damn thing working." You can't even spell "LSP" correctly in your "we suck" admission.

Glad you got it. I put LSPFix on my "bag-of-tricks" thumb drive, nd made a mental note of your situation and fix since I'll likely see both again.
Large-capacity external hard drives are cheap these days. They're convenient, but the transfer takes twice as long in a scenario like yours since the files and settings move twice.

It took about 6 or 7 hours to transfer 32 GB over a 100 MB cisco connection, and it never completed at home on wireless when left alone all night. I can't imagine how slow a USB drive would have been for this.
I would think it would be a good idea to move your "My Docs" folder first as I'm betting the utility isn't the best for large file transfers.
