1 - do you refill your old ones
2 - buy brand new factory ink cartridges buy the maker of your printer.
3 - buy refilled ink cartidges from a company or shop that sells them.
4 - buy printer ink cartridges from a company that sells compatable cartages for your printer.

when i've done that, i've had mixed performance. to avoid the hassle (and the headache from an annoyed wife), i just get the manufacturer's cartridges.

5 - I dont print
Anythign I want saved, gets printed to PDFCreator an open source PDF printer. If really really need somethign printed I have a laser printer buried in a corner which has at least another 4000 pages worth of toner that i can hook up, or the more likely scenario...print it at work.

I print way too much (a lot for work and my wife being a teacher since the state took money for everything away) and I've recently switched to Officemax knock offs with good results. Saves quite a bit for my color laser.

Same with me. I tried to buy knock-offs from reputable merchants several times. They gummed up a nice Epson Inkjet that I had, and I had to throw the entire printer away. I bought knock-offs from a different "reputable" company the next time too, and the cartridges gummed up after about ~200 pages and I threw the cartridge away. Went back to normal epson cartridges, and they're worth the price IMO.

pretty wasteful, and i plan on not doing this anymore, but I've stocked up on printers.....
whenever i find a laser printer on sale for 50 bucks, I would buy them. once a cartridge went out, I would just replace the printer. I have a couple printers in my garage that i said i would put on craigslist to get rid of but have been too lazy to so far.
but yeah. my reasoning was, i can buy a printer, & sell it on craigslist without ink when i was done.
and it would be cheaper than buying ink replacements.
but yeah, i'm just feeding the machine for cheap electronics, so i decided to stop. I'm on my last laser printer, and i have bought a networked printer/scanner that I'll be replacing that with once the ink dies and keep it as my permanent printer from here on out.
