Pit bull found tied to a picnic table, bloody, in sub-zero temps

January 24, 2011 -- Utica Police are looking for the owner of a dog that suffered extensive injuries after being left out in sub-zero temperatures -- tied to a table on a street corner -- Monday morning.

The photos of the three-year-old pit bull, a white and brown male, are arguably disturbing. The small dog has wound markings all over his body – including patches where skin and hair have been torn away. He is bloody, and visibly distraught – ears back, tail curled under his legs and eyes drooping.

UPD Sgt. Steve Hauck, Public Information Officer, posted them on the UPD Facebook page just a few hours after the incident.

“A neighbor called the police around 5:30 a.m. after hearing the dog crying outside,” Hauck said.

When police responded to the corner of Whitesboro and Dewitt streets, they were disturbed by what they saw – blood on the snowy sidewalk and the picnic table where the dog was tied up.

Animal shelter officials reported that the pup is suffering from frostbite on several areas of his body.

“We have no idea how long out he was out there,” Hauck said. “When it’s that cold, I would think the cold can kill you pretty quickly, and for a dog, I bet it’s just as quickly. As you can see from the photos, he’s pretty hurt. He has marks on his face, and is not a well-cared-for animal.”

The dog was outside for an unknown amount of time, Hauck said. Overnight temperatures across Central New York reached more than 20-degrees below zero. At one point, the pup was frozen to the ground, he added.

“He had icicles all over him,” Hauck said, pointing out the various areas where the dog’s skin was bare and bloody with patches of fur missing from it. “Animals try to curl up in a ball to stay warm. That’s from him lying out in the cold. Probably his skin froze and when he tried to move, it tore.”

The owner of the pup is being sought by UPD. Anyone who might have information about who the dog’s owner is and where that person could be should contact UPD’s Criminal Investigation Unit at 223-3500. All calls can be kept confidential.

When police find the person who left the pup outside, they could face a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty, depending on the situation.

“We’ve got to find out the circumstances behind the dog being there, first,” Hauck said. “We do know the dog was out there in the freezing cold, that’s for sure.”

In the meantime, the dog is being treated at Steven-Swann’s Humane Society.

“I’m sure they’ve got a little bit of work ahead of them,” Hauck said. “He was pretty lethargic from what I understand.”

“This dog definitely has signs of having frostbite, and being neglected and abused,” said SSHS spokesman Jerry Kraus at the shelter. “He has bloody sores on his paws and back end.”

At this point in time, the dog has not been named. He is being closely observed at the shelter, and officials are hoping to see a full recovery.

“Our veterinary staff is monitoring him to see that he stays warm. He’s walking around and drinking a little bit,” Kraus said, adding that the pup has been provided with blankets, food and water. “We don’t know to what extent he’s been abused, if he has. He’s very thin, and I think he’s got some other issues besides being left out last night.”

Animal abuse may not be an every-day story in the local papers, but Hauck said it’s prominent enough because many of the victims of animal abuse happen to be pit bulls. Just last week, police received word that one had been shot by an unknown man on January 19. The following day, suffering from a severed spinal cord, the dog was euthanized.

“We’re still working on the case, but there are no new leads on it,” Hauck said. “If anyone has any information we will take it.”

But the thing to remember is that now, the American pit bull terrier, also known as the Staffordshire terrier, are a pretty popular breed, Hauck said.

“I remember years back, the Doberman was the big breed,” he said. “That’s what it is now -- the pit bull is an extremely popular breed, so when we see stories about them biting or being abused, I think it’s just because there are more of them.”

The same goes for situations like this dog’s, where a pup might be a stray and someone ties him up because they think he’s better off there than running into traffic. Of if he’s a pet, he appears to have been a neglected one, Kraus pointed out.

“We will see more of these (cases) this year,” he said. “It’s absurd, but we will see more of these frostbitten animals. We’re always hoping we won’t, but I have a feeling we will.”
And while police don’t want to assume anything about this situation in particular, he said the case looks pretty bad.

“Animals for the most part are defenseless,” Hauck said about pets. “They depend on humans to eat, and to have a warm place to sleep. As humans, we’re pretty attached to our domesticated animals, and it hits home when we see things like this.”

With so many foreclosures animals are being abandoned every day. The families can't keep them when they move to an apartment or in some cases when they start living in a shelter.

It's not that the animals aren't loved, it's just that the owner can't think of a way to still care for them. Some people are probably leaving the animal in a public place and hoping that someone will take them home.
