Title this thread "Rob these people"
Prices have come down a bunch on a lot of this stuff, but this is what was spent:
$700 home entertainment center (closeout)
$2000 in 5.0 speakers
$300 Sub woofer (HEAVILY discounted due to massive delay in aforementioned speakers, retailed for $900)
$600 subwoofer. SVS PB12-NSD if anyone's in the market, the other one trumps this one.
$600 AVR, though it would be worth much less now.
$300 PS3
$350 in PS3 accessories plus HD upgrade
$2100 for 52" Sony Bravia LCD
$150 in cabling - HDMI, speaker wiring, sub cables, etc. *NOT the Monster brand.
Keep in mind, my ex paid for the TV and the PS3 for 2 years, most of which was after she dumped me. That'll teach her for dating a duche just after me that her family can't stand. :)
I'm possibly in the market for a entry level audiophile grade set of headphones. We'll see.

$65 for wall mount
$130 for a very basic 5.1 home theater system (needed better sound than the TV puts out) w/ 1080 upconverting DVD player
$80 (I think) for BluRay player (had picked this up a while ago, still need to try hooking up its Netflix, etc. access)

As purchased in 1998:
(2) large Jensen speakers (3-way with 15" woofers), $90 each
(1) open-box entry-level Pioneer receiver, $90
(1) 5-disc Sony CD player, $120
To replace now:
I wouldn't replace the CD player. Maybe $400 to find equivalent speakers and receiver nowadays.

It is surprising to know how much people spend on all these things,, and we hardly get the time to enjoy all these..
