We are responsible for the perceptions others have of us. Accurate or inaccurate, intentional or unintentional.

I'm a big fan of personal accountability, but we have our own accountability in investigating our perceptions, and running parity on them to make sure they are valid.
Example...
I walk down the street and see 2 black guys walking the other direction wearing hoodies. Should I perceive them as a personal threat just based on how they look? Do I blame them for my fear of being attacked?
I agree in principle, but as a rule, I'd tread loosely on this one. Perception is a 2 way street: no one side is at fault.

Nickel, while I'm sure you're saying it from the perspective of wanting to be responsible and accountable for yourself, which is admirable, I can see many people using such a belief as justification to freely be prejudiced of others, like gwilks's example scenario.
I do believe, however, that we are responsible for doing our own dishes.

Yes, I was seeing it as being responsible for myself and for what others think of me. I didn't even think about it in the way gwilks did which is why posting this stuff on a messageboard is worthwhile. Different eye opening perspectives do and will come up.
I would still like someone to do my dishes, but I will make the bed. So it evens out? :P

If I'm doin' the dishes... you gotta make the bed AND fold the clothes. Dishes take a bit longer than just a standard bed making. ;)
BTW... people are gonna think whatever about you that they want. Not really much you can do about that. You just have to be true to yourself and just move on whenever necessary for those folks who are gonna judge you like that.

Good point. The older I get the more I think that life is simply finding a balance between being responsible/courteous and being able to not give a f*ck.

Honestly, I really do try to treat people as I would like them to treat me...
However, with that in mind, I'm still not knowingly gonna walk myself into a bad position getting into a conflict with someone who I already feel is gonna cause a problem due to difference in perspective. I've learned to just let it go... but alot of folks don't, especially once you've alerted them to it.
