Need help..... Want to be immortalized in history?

OKay, heres the deal,

My 8 yr old son and I are doing a geography project where we are collecting soil/sand samples from all 50 states. When we are done he will literally own a piece of every state. It's a really cool project and he is super excited about it. I told him, when it is done, none of his friends will ahve anything like it. We are also creating a little fact sheet about each state along with a small paragraph about whoever got that particular sample for us.


Where we need help is geting some of those samples. We dont know people in every state, so we need some networking. If you are able to cover one state for us, assistance would be greatly appreciated. We will cover postage both ways, sending a sample container, along with a prepaid postage mailer. All you will ahve to do is gather a bit of sand, put it in the sample container, in that in the envelope, and then in the mail.

States that are already covered are: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, TExas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, and Nevada.

NOpe not a school project, just a for fun thing. He is really interested in gography and is an outstanding student.

He is 8 yrs old and in second grade. CUrrently he is 3 grade levels ahead in reading, 4 grade levels agead in math,and has shown a enjoyment in geography of all things. He can find all 50 states on a blank map and knows most of the capitals. I figured that was pretty good for an 8yr old. LOL so there is no timeline. I told him this might take us a year to do, maybe longer. I anticipated help from the nice folks at Apex, but not quite the excellent response I got. There are still a few taht are going to be very difficult to get.

So still needed are -
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia , Washington, West Virginia.

Nah, no jealousy...just good clean fun poking at the southener. As you know where I live is just transplanted northerners...mostly damn New Yorker blue hairs. There is as much difference between the panhandle and South Florida as there is between California and the "State" of Jefferson (http://www.jeffersonstate.com/jeffersonstory.html).

Its different. We never had a body of water catch fire, though the water was so polluted that we did have ships dock here just to kill off the barnicles. That seems to no longer be the case.

I got a PM asking if there was a rush becuase that wonderful helpful person wanted to obtain something a little more interesting than just a part of his backyard. My response to that may be usful for everyone.

THere is no rush at all. STill have several states unaccounted for. Once I find someone for those states, I may get a bit more impatient, but if it takes us the rest of the year to finish this, thats fine too. Whatever you think wold be great.

For example, if you live in NOrthern Texas, but are going to the Alamo <not the car rental place> in May, we would prefer you wait till May and get something totally awesome. BUt if you just want to send a piece f your backyard, or the beach a mile down the road, that great too.

We do prefer sand to soil (dirt) but are not picky. I figured the return postage based on sand weight and added 20%. Soil with its moisture content may push it over the prepaid postage level (i doubt it, but maybe) If so, let me know and ill mail you the 18 cents lol.

Just got the kit this past weekend. We're definitely planning on a trip down sometime in May, so, it'll be on it's way in a few weeks. (it's going to be soil though).

No prob, sorry it took so long. Since Im assuming its arrived at your place by now, here's the story behind the sample for everyone else here.

I wrote something along the lines of...

This sample was collected on 7/4/2011 at Coney Island Beach behind the original Nathan's during the MLE (Major League Eaters) Hotdog eating contest, which was won by Joey Chestnut after eating 62 hotdogs with buns. This was his 5th consecutive win, which earned him the coveted Mustard Yellow belt and a $10,000 prize.

As for beating it...Im sure people can get creative. Whomever gets Georgia could collect sand from Tybee Island (popular beach area) which I believe is well within the blast radius of a nuke that was lost during a plane crash in the 50s.

PA has an evacuated town called Centrilia where there was a coal mine fire that due to a few bad choices spread to the point where it could no longer be stopped. Decades later its still burning.
