The Bronx Zoo closed its reptile house exhibit over the weekend after workers discovered a highly poisonous Egyptian cobra was missing from its enclosure.
The snake's disappearance prompted zoo officials to immediately shut down the reptile house late Friday until further notice "out of an abundance of caution," a statement said.
"We are confident that the snake," an adolescent, 20-inch-long cobra, "is contained in a non-public, isolation area within the building," it said, adding that snakes are known to prefer enclosed spaces to open areas.
A zoo spokeswoman said the snake remained missing as of Sunday.
Visitors to the zoo and its website were informed that the World of Reptiles exhibit was closed.
The Egyptian cobra is a venomous snake found in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It can grow to 6 to 8 feet in length.

At least the zoo will get an influx of cash from everyone visiting the snake now.

Good point, maybe they should let snakes escape more often.

why stop at lions, why not release all the animals and maybe we can spray "we did it" and some sort of insignia everywhere

Uh-huh. In the eighteenth century, no such thing, nada, nothing. No one ever imagined such a thing. No sane person, anyway. Ah! Ah! Along comes this doctor, uh, uh, uh, Semmelweis, Semmelweis. Semmelweis comes along. He's trying to convince people, well, other doctors mainly, that's there's these teeny tiny invisible bad things called germs that get into your body and make you sick. Ah? He's trying to get doctors to wash their hands. What is this guy? Crazy? Teeny, tiny, invisible? What do you call it? Uh-uh, germs? Huh? What? Now, cut to the 20th century. Last week, as a matter of fact, before I got dragged into this hellhole. I go in to order a burger in this fast food joint, and the guy drops it on the floor. Jim, he picks it up, he wipes it off, he hands it to me like it's all OK. "What about the germs?" I say. He says, "I don't believe in germs. Germs is just a plot they made up so they can sell you disinfectants and soaps." Now he's crazy, right? See?

Like Marsellus Wallace's wife? Keepers best keep their H hidden so she don't go snorting it.
