IM looking at doing a case swap. I already have one drive with Windows 7 loaded on it . Im wanting to add a second drive that has windows xp loaded on it as my slave. will there be a conflict both drives are IDE?

no, but i believe you have to install XP first. at least that was always the rule, oldest and least competent OS first.

MS before Linux
98 before xp
xp before vista
etc

Why not use a virtual machine though? It works great, and no need to reboot.

the first drive has windows 7 preloaded on it. now the slave drive i'll be adding has xp pro preinstalled on it.

Here's what I'd do.

Install the components in the new case with only the Windows 7 drive in it. Once you get everything loaded, then you can add the Windows XP drive and make it a "slave". You may have to modify some settings in your BIOS to correctly identify the correct boot drive so that you don't accidentally boot the XP drive.

Also, you can look in the Computer, Manage, then Disk Management panel to make sure that both drive are functional once you get everything connected.

Do you want to be able to boot to XP, or are you just installing a second drive (that happens to have XP on it) as a slave drive for your Windows 7. If so, shouldn't be a problem (other than wasted space on the drive for the XP OS).

That's pretty much what I have and it works fine, though I did start with XP on both drives and then later converted one to Win7. It boots from the Win7 drive with a choice for either OS. Both drives are IDE on the same cable.
