Some days I find myself wanting to just go on a self imposed media black out.
Is there any good news out there???

I usually have a "new-radio" station on as I drive to/from work (20-25 minutes each way). Aside from an occasional story I see on my home page that interests me, that's about the extent of it.

I generally listen to NPR Daily. And read "Yahoo Streaming Updates" Which isn't all news, it puts in random blog stuff sometimes, and other stuff. As well as AP News. As long as you avoid reading all comments, it's ok. No matter what the story, someone has taken it political.

Quite a bit, mostly all radio. NPR has been my usual source for years, a few hours a day at least. I've been disillusioned with MSM for a long time and recently I decided that NPR belongs in that category.
MSM is just waaay to centralized, homogeneous, PC, formulated, controlled, and mostly brainless and complacent. The thing that kills NPR for me as a news organization is their website. Go there looking for some serious objective news and there's a ton of distracting nonsense about sports, movies, pop culture. Don't get me wrong, that stuff has value, but it is very different from the serious reporting I'm looking for on government, economy, wars, world events, etc.
Fortunately, the truth is that there's a lot of different stuff out there, a ton of smaller outlets just waiting to be tapped. They're usually not as polished or refined, they can be a little rough, but that itself brings more honesty into it.
So lately I've been exploring other outlets. My favorites thus far? I think what really started it was discovery of Al Jazeera for their Arab Spring coverage. Their coverage of Fukoshima and other events has been good too. They seem to be a pretty well-rounded source for world events, without the US-centered spin that MSM almost invariably has. Then listening to some interesting stuff here (http://www.gcnlive.com/), daily broadcasts from Alex Jones (hmm...) and Peter Schiff (solid as always). Stumbled across the Alyona Show on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAlyonaShow#g/u) and have been following that for a week or two.
I highly recommend that everyone take a step back from the MSM and go seek out some smaller more independent sources. Diversity in the media is a very good thing.

For global news, http://english.aljazeera.net/
For local stuff, whatever pops up on my homepage - ends up being a mix of WSJ, CNN, Wired & The Onion.

Honestly, I have pretty much given up on "mainstream media" giving "the news". More or less, they are just looking for Headlines I suppose.
Although the weather report is sometimes right. ;)

to darn much ! i look online as i have excite set as my home page. then i see a story im interested in i dig into it more.
then a lot of times i search cnn,bbc for more world news when im board. and at 11 pm i turn on the local shooting network in detroit (any of the local news stations).to see who and were they shot at/up/killed in the last 24 hours.never watch the local news any more to get the local weather. it's what it is I can't change it anyway .just prep for it at best:)

I barely read any at all...I no longer watch the local/world news on TV and only get a few updates on local news via tweets...but it's usually "x people got killed in x neighborhood" type of news.

On a related note: I've noticed that it seems the local / state papers have ramped up the "Fundraiser's" to have kids go out and sell their papers for them.

Yeah.. And while I don't really agree with getting kids to beg for your service.. I have to admit it's a clever idea. Harder to turn down.

Yep. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I'm interested in following a smaller left-leaning news outlet for a while, preferably in an internet talk radio format. Any suggestions?
