Do you observe it? What do you do?

I remember as a kid it seemed more of a big deal. We all caught a Memorial Day parade and felt the patriotism, nostalgia, as servicemen and women in uniform walked by in unison.

Then we visited the cemetery to pay respect to the deceased.

Next came a barbeque with family and friends aplenty.

I wonder if I was more in awe of it because I was a kid at the time or because it doesn't seem like people are that committed to the meaning of Memorial Day anymore.

I think nowadays it is more symbolic as the start of summer.

I used to work at a marina where dock rentals ran from Memorial Day to Labor day. For most people I think it's just a day off. Maybe have a BBQ, do some yard work, enjoy the weather, but I agree it seems to have lost most of its "patriotic" significance.

From my own experience, despite living in DC when I was younger and 20 minutes now, that we just did the BBQ or it was just another day in the mom and pop shop.

My father and grandfather both served, as did I. So we were all well aware of the sacrifice our countrymen made so that we may enjoy the freedoms that we do.

But it seems that we, as a people, celebrate those that fell for our country less and less.
