I was installing a new hard drive and somewhere in the process of
reformating my old drive and removing it from my computer i ended up having to remove the old swap file from that disk. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but then once I removed the swap and rebooted it gives a error that I either don't have a swap file or it's too small. It then says to proceed to "my computer" and explainsn how to change it. But the problem is that I can't even get my desktocome up, therefore I can't get to "My computer". I cant even get into the safe mode or console to fix anything. I would like to know if there is a way to manually change these virtual memory settings, via registery or .ini file editing. I now have 2 copies of win2k running, so I can still access to all the files from my old win2k version. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

yes I have tried going back to last known good configuration, but it didn't work. i guess it doesn't take the swap file in account. Both installs are on the same partition, so the pagefile is located on the C;, same as the old install. I completely wiped out the swap file on the old install. I figured I could reset it later. So it's was set at zero. The new install is set to default size, but the first install still doesn't recognize it.
The message it gives me is very "mircosoft" It tells me it doesn't have enough memory blah blah and tells me what to do to change the settings. Once I click okay; I hear my startup music, once that finishes playing, then my shut down music plays. (During this time the desktop stays black) Then the message shows up again.
LOOP UNTIL you hit the reset button.
anymore ideas?
thanks

Boot to win2k "safe mode" -- do this by pressing F8 at startup (you should see a message to press F8 during the first part of the boot process). Then right-click my computer and select properties (or go to the control panel and double-click "system") then go to the advanced tab and select performance options, then change your paging file size.

Good luck!

tryed that before. It wouldn't load in safe-mode or console. IT was *ucked..
Sooooooo I reformated and now I'm back with a clean install of win2k. This new 7200 rpm IBM drive is sweet.
Just a reminder to anyone. Windows needs virtual memory. So don't get clever and set it to zero for whatever reason
