Part of me's thinking that this one's just a bunch of hype. It's already down to Category 1. Just a big scare because the East Coast, north of the Carolinas or so hasn't had a big storm in a loooong time and history shows we're probably overdue for one. But at this point methinks Irene isn't gonna be the catastrophe she could've been if she were stronger.

It's always better to be well prepared, instead of sorry later.

Very true, gotta agree there. It seems a bit silly when there's a bunch of hullabaloo and nothing happens... but... what if just once there was no hullabaloo and something DID happen?
I guess it's like what I tell myself at a busy intersection. Little gap appears, I think I could shoot out and squeeze in there, decide not to. My first instinct is "jeez, coulda gone there". Then I remind myself, "I'd rather say that a thousand times instead of having to say just once "SH*T, SHOULDN'T have gone there!' *CRASH*"

People freak out. It's in their nature. When it snows really heavy in Oklahoma, the shelves are empty. People assume they're going to be stuck in their houses for weeks. When in reality it may be a day, two at the most, before you can get back out to the store if you need to.

I found it fun to be in Home depot casually picking up stuff in closet hardware section and flooring, while at the other end of the store people were raping the shelves and edncaps of batteries and flashlights.
Stood in a long ass line at the supermarket where people again were clearing shelves, and I stood there with a bag of chips and some dip.
Im not sure why people felt the need to clear the shelves there. For 2 days max that they might not be able to get to the store, do they not have enough bread, pb & j?

and the stores will have returns like the day after christmas today. those that buy generators will fine out there non returnable. even if they never open up the carton at most stores.they will fine out there is black out days on those items. I have seen home depot do that locally on items. here its been mostly on snow blowers but generators to.
