So I bought a cantaloupe yesterday. Still a bit firm, def. not mushy or moldy. CUt it open today and right away I noticed a vry heavy chemical smell, to the point where I dont even need to be right on top of it, and it actually burns the nose a bit. Smells similar to acetone. I (bravely) tired a very small piece and didnt dectect any offense in the taste.

Question is......

Anyone have a theory on this? Experience this before? Is it possible that the fruit started to ferment? Its very strange, and I have never heard of someone experiening this before.

I bit of clarification before the questions even come.

The odor was not dectectable from the outside. I noticed a real faint smell when I cut it but didnt not realize where it was coming from. ONce the seeds were removed, the odor was very powerful. It has been washed on the inside and out (not something i normally do with cantaloupe, but i thought i would try it) orodr reamins, IT has also been sitting for a while, and it has not disipated at all.

I have already easily decided to dispose of it, not going to take a chance feeding it to my kids. However, I am still curious.
