Looking for ideas/recommendations on a new cell phone. We are with Att currently although I hope to change at the end of the contract come June. I gave my original phone to my son as his died out of warranty, and have been using my Dell Streak. As I sat at my desk the other day it fell out of my sweatpants pocket and face planted. The screen still works, but is unreadable in areas due to fracturing of the touch screen. It also is kind of a pain as a phone due to it's shape.
I'd like to get something I could use with any carrier if that is even possible as I am not sure who we will move to in a few months. Or maybe I'd be better finding something dirt cheap until the contract is up.
Thanks for any ideas.

There are "world phones" but its still not quite any carrier, as im not sure you can get both Verizon and sprint, i think it might be one or the other.
Most GSM phones can be unlocked and used on any GSM carrier (ATT Tmobile).
If your contract is up, you might want to look at a regional carrier. Here we have Boost, MetroPCS, and Virgin. All offer much better plans than Srint and Verizon who own them, but more limited phone selections. If I paid for my plan, Id jump to one of those in a heartbeat.

If I was looking to change carriers, I would consider take a look at Republic Wireless (http://republicwireless.com/). You buy the phone for $200, the for $19/mo you get "unlimited" voice/text/data. The catch is that you have to use WiFi when available (mandatory at your home). They piggyback on the Sprint network.

becareful who ever you sign up with .most now are charging a reactavation fee when you get a new phone when your contracts up .sprints doing this now even if your not really changing your plan just exstending it. it's there way of recooping some of the cost of that free or discounted new phone you just got.

How much do you use your phone and what for?

Thanks for the ideas. A friend of one of my sons saw my phone and told me to type in the phone type and replacement screen into Google, and E Bay and I'd probably find a seller of replacement screens. He is correct. I am going to have to do some double checking of the sellers, but it looks like I can get a replacement screen for around $50 -$75, and I don't have to deal with getting out of my Att contract early.
Merkel, do you use Republic Wireless? I like the idea and cost, but am curious about reliability of the company.
Thanks again

Dell will not be the answer. They quoted me $249 which would be a new Streak 5. Through Gotapex I paid $50, so that seems ridiculous. I will look into the Ebay and Amazon options.

I don't have Republic. I read about the a few months ago, and their pricing really caught my attention.
A google on "republic wireless reviews" turns up some generally positive results.
