PS3 - is it worth it?

Ever since the PS3 came out, I had planned on buying one but I was put off by the lack of backwards capability. I kept hoping that new version would be backwards compatible, but that is never going to happen. I have to replace a piece of hardware and I am trying to decide between just buying another Blu-ray player, which is the cheaper option, or biting the bullet and buying the PS3.

To be clear, I am not a die hard gamer...I was big into gaming back when I was rocking my original flawed pentium chip with a first generation flight stick. :hihi: Now I just play games every once in a while. So I am trying to decide if it is really worth buying the PS3. I am also trying to decide what the purpose/benefit of the drive size is with the PS3. Are you ripping the game to the HD and then playing it off of the drive rather than the disc? Or is is simply for game data>

what do u mean lack of backward capability? to my knowledge, the 80gb ps3 IS backward compatible.

as for the gaming, i'm very happy with my ps3. i'm not a heavy gamer, but when i do play, i love the graphics ps3 has.

I was under the impression that they removed backwards compatibility with an update and that there's a class action over it.

I love my PS3, but Sony's business practices are making it hard to compete with Xbox. On the plus side, I've uploaded a few of my favorite shows to my PS3 (in AVI format) to get it off my DVR, and I have some MP3s for party music as well.

No, they only rip some of the game to the hard disk for caching purposes, but some games take 4-5 GB a piece.

That's pretty much what I use my PS3 for.

As far as backwards compatible, I believe the only ones were the original 60GB model and the 80GB model was partially compatible. I don't know if they removed the features, but they don't sell those models any more. There's only two games I'd really want to play that I miss: FF12 and Star Ocean. Otherwise, you'll get spoiled on the graphics and go back to the newer games.
I think all PS3s can play PSone games, btw.

If you do get one, you should get the Uncharted Series.

So if you had the choice of buying the 160 vs the 320, which would you do? I know that lots of people mod them with larger drives, but I am still trying to determine if there is a true benefit to the extra space if its not going to be used as your media hub.

It depends on how many games you want to play (and how much caching data you want to keep.)

It may seem like no big deal, but sometimes you'll have to wait 10-20 minutes to play a game that hasn't been "installed" yet. If you like to go back and play old games, that gets annoying. I believe newer blu-rays are also installing data to run on your PS3.

If I had a choice, I'd buy the 320, but only because I don't want to have to worry about space anytime soon. But if you're not using it to store media, go with the $160 and use the savings to buy yourself a second controller.

The hard drive can be swapped out. I have a 500GB in my original 60GB.

I still play the GTA from PSone from time to time.

I believe everyone is correct they removed the backward stuff and the ability to run Linux about two years ago.

I've been very happy with my PS3 purchase since I got it in November 2011. Not a hardcore gamer either, but found I've already collected around 15 games now. I play a few online, and enjoy the fact I don't have to pay a monthly fee for it like Xbox.

the first couple of models had hardware backwards compatibility with PS2 and PSOne. Later, they had software compatibility. Current models are not backwards compatible, because most of those games can now be downloaded via the Sony Store.
