I just got one of the the latest deals from Best Buy (BB). This is my first new computer and I don't know much about hardware. It's an HP 6830 (Celeron 700 MHz, 64MB, 20gig HD, 48x CD-Rom.) BB tried to sell me a computer optimization for $30. He wouldn't tell me exactly what he was going to do so I refused it. Does anyone know what it is that is going to be done and is it needed? Is this something I can do on my own (via manual)? Or is there any freeware that will do this for me? Or should I take it back up there and have them do this for me.

Does anyone know anything about the BB 3-year warranty? I have until the 28th to buy it, would anyone recommend I do?

Also, my priorities right now for my computer are school and internet. I am beginning a Interactive Media program. Can anyone tell me how upgradeable my computer is and what do you suggest I do to get maximum performance out of it. I know eventually I will need a high perf computer, but I would like to do with this one for right now.

Do not get the optimization or the warranty! if your computer doesn't break down in the first month chances are it won't break down any time soon. Computers drop in price so fast that even if it does break down your better off buying another one. As far as upgrading, I strongly suggest you buy more ram. Memory is really cheap right now and you'll get a huge boost if you increase it. You can get 128 PC133 memory for about 45 bucks.

Their optimization is a coat of Armour all and I believe they put racing stripes on it. Rip off city.

Thanks, I'll take your advice and not give them any more money. Memory Question: When I upgrade RAM, are there extra slots or do I replace what's already existing? How much RAM do you suggest? If this is easy, I'd like to try installing myself.

it's easy, but it depends on your computer how many slots you have, etc. This would be a good time to check the manual, under RAM upgrades..they should have pictures and recommendations.
